Scotland women defeated by Ireland in Nations Cup in Santiago
Scotland 0-3 Ireland
A tough contest in the heat of Santiago, Chile, saw Scotland women lose 3-0 to Ireland at the FIH Nations Cup.
Ireland took the lead in the first quarter when they took advantage of a penalty corner opportunity. The initial strike was charged down by Charlotte Watson, but Ireland got a second bite at the cherry and Mikayla Power slammed a low effort against the backboard for 1-0.
Scotland finished the quarter strong but Ireland defended well and kept the danger at bay.
The second quarter was very tight but Scotland created the best chance of the quarter. An aerial ball by Amy Costello picked out Watson in the Ireland circle, and the striker did well to hold off the defender and fire an effort towards goal, but it went just wide of the right post.
Scotland was pressing for an equaliser but got caught by a sucker punch. A Scottish penalty corner was defended, prompting a long pass down the left wing, which exposed the Scottish defence and Niamh Carey had all the time in the world to find the net for 2-0.
After half time Ireland was very effective at breaking down Scottish possession and edged higher and higher up the pitch. The quarter was void of clean opportunities and Scotland had a huge task going into the final quarter to get back into the match.
Scotland began the final quarter by pressing high up the pitch and looked dangerous. However it would be Ireland who would score next when Kathryn Mullan scored to kill off Scotland’s chances. Next up, Scotland face Korea on Tuesday.
