Scotland women defeated by Ireland at the EuroHockey Championships

Day two of the Women’s EuroHockey Championships saw Scotland lose 5-0 to Ireland in Monchengladbach.

The first opportunity of the match came when Scotland made good progress down the right, and Katie Robertson zipped a pass across goal, but it evaded all the attackers bearing down on the Irish target.

The Scots came close again when they worked the ball to Sarah Jamieson, at the top of the circle, and Jamieson’s shot on the turn fizzed against the keeper’s leg guards, then just wide of the right post.

Then a huge opportunity presented itself to Ireland, but Amy Gibson was out quick, and the ball took a nick of the keeper, and ended up wide of the post.

Two Scotland penalty corner opportunities towards the end of the quarter couldn’t be capitalised on, and the quarter would end in stalemate.

A different Ireland came out for the second quarter, and with Scotland down to ten players, they made a great start and took a 1-0 lead after a driven ball into the circle was sunk into the bottom right corner by Hannah McLoughlin.

Ireland quickly went 2-0 ahead with a goal at the second attempt by Ellen Curran after an attack down the right.

The waves of Irish attacks continued to sweep in on the Scottish goal, and a great save low to the right by Jess Buchanan stopped Ireland from scoring a third from a penalty corner.

The third goal came soon enough for Ireland, and a quick counter allowed Niamh Carey to blast the ball into the bottom right corner.

Scotland reset at the break, and Heather McEwan almost pulled one back in the third quarter, after some good work down the right saw Ruth Blaikie pick out McEwan for a near post deflection, but the ball found the outside of the post.

The Irish were still on point, however, and great save by Buchanan early in the final quarter denied a fourth goal, as Ireland looked to seal the win.

Ireland wouldn’t be denied their fourth goal and it was scrambled home by Sarah Torrans to make it 4-0 in the final quarter.

Torrans had the ball in the net again when a quick counter saw Ireland find the bottom left corner to go 5-0 ahead. The goal rounded off the scoring, and Ireland took the vital points with one pool game remaining.
