Scotland Women continue European build-up against Canada & Ireland
Canada and Ireland will provide the opposition for Scotland Women next week as they continue their preparations for the EuroHockey Nations Championship in Belgium later this summer.
The Scots will play four internationals from 1-5 July in Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland, including one match against the Canadians before three subsequent encounters with their Irish hosts.
Scotland Women Head Coach Gordon Shepherd has selected a group of 23 players for this series as he and his coaching team start to put their thoughts towards selecting a final squad of players for the forthcoming European competition.
“While Canada will be well prepared after matches against Wales and Ireland, I expect to beat them in the first game”, said Shepherd. “Ireland will be tough and close as always but the players will be focussing on getting results against them as well as the standard of performance.
“The squad for the European championship in August will come from this group of players. Once we are finished this series, we go into three weeks of training before two matches against Belgium at the end of July so both individual and collective performances next week will be very important as we start to focus the mind on this important competition.”
The national side played Ireland only as recently as two weeks ago, drawing 2-2 and winning 4-3 over two matches at Peffermill in Edinburgh, before stepping up to face South Africa in a four match series a few days later, when they won one, lost two and drew one.
Canada and Ireland themselves have been playing each other during this week in a three match series, with Canada winning the first match 3-2, Ireland winning the second 2-1, and a 4-4 draw to round off the trio of internationals.
