Scotland women book spot in FIH World Cup Qualifiers semi-finals
Scotland women defeated Uruguay 3-1 in their last pool match at the FIH World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad, India. It means Scotland will play England in the semi-finals of the tournament with the chance of gaining a place in the FIH World Cup.
In a contest that saw Jenny Eadie win her 100th cap for her country, Scotland made a scrappy start as Uruguay enjoyed the early play, but after sustaining the early threat the Scots began to play into the contest.
The Scottish resurgence resulted in the game’s opening goal. From a penalty corner, Eadie, on her 100th cap, slapped the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0 to Scotland.
Early in the second quarter Uruguay struck back when Teresa Viana scored a deflection from a drag flick low at the left post for 1-1.
Scotland took control again and pressed for another goal. Uruguay still posed a significant threat and a magnificent top corner save by Jess Buchanan from a deflection from long pass into the circle denied a goal.
Scotland went back in front in the third quarter when Katherine Holdgate slammed the ball into the roof of the net from a rebound off the goalkeeper for 2-1.
Uruguay threw everything at Scotland in the final quarter and should have equalised early in the quarter. Charlotte Watson had an effort cleared off the line as Scotland tried to put the game to bed.
Holdgate finished the contest when she swept the ball into an empty net on a counter after Uruguay took off their goalkeeper for a 3-1 lead, and a place in the semi-finals.
