Scotland women beat Italy 3-1 in third test
It was a series victory ahead of Birmingham 2022 for Scotland women over Italy as they won the third contest of three 3-1 at Peffermill.
Scotland enjoyed good possession in the early stages of the match but the first opportunity to strike at goal fell to Italy through a penalty corner. The resulting strike from the top of the D was deflected wide of the mark in front of the goalkeeper.
Moments later Scotland had a penalty corner of their own and they made it count. A lovely exchange in the D found Heather McEwan arriving at the far post to tap the ball home. 1-0.
Italy had a chance to equalise shortly before the end of the quarter but a nice shot on the turn went wide of the left post.
A good start to the second half saw Scotland pressurise the Italian goal with Fiona Burnet coming close with a glancing near post effort.
Right at the end of the half Italy equalised through a lovely move that was finished at close range to make it 1-1.
Just over a minute into the second half and Scotland came within a whisker of restoring their lead but Burnet’s effort from a tight angle skipped just wide.
Scotland got their second goal soon enough and it came from a well worked penalty corner routine; Robyn Collins set it up nicely for Amy Costello to blast home for 2-1.
In the final quarter Louise Campbell furthered Scotland’s advantage when she arrived at the far post to tap home Millie Steiger’s ball and make it 3-1.
In the closing stages Costello hammered another corner from the top of the D goal-ward but it fizzed wide of the right post.
There would be no further goals but it was a convincing series victory for Scotland ahead of Birmingham 2022.
Head Coach Chris Duncan said, “We’re unbeaten in ten games now and I’m really pleased with that. It’s been a really long preparation phase and I’m really proud of the players for all the performances we’ve put in as we build towards Birmingham.
“We’re in as good a position as we could be at the back end of this prep phase; we’ve played three games against a really good Italy team and we showed our ability to play in different ways. We can press high and cause teams problems, we can sit deep and nullify threat, we can play on the counter and we can build up. It’s been a really good test over this series and I’m very happy with the place we’re in.”
