Scotland win big in Women’s Junior World Cup in Chile

Scotland 4-0 Namibia

A tremendous 4-0 victory for Scotland over Namibia saw the team’s first victory in Women’s Junior World Cup in 20 years.

Mhairi Low had the game’s first chance but a good save, bursting out quickly to close down the shot, denied the goal.

The game was five minutes old when Low opened the scoring with a tap in at the left post at a penalty corner she injected, to make it 1-0.

Namibia worked back into the contest but Scotland contained their pressure well as the first quarter came to a close.

The second quarter saw Scotland start to exert some pressure in search of a second goal, and it was Marianna Maclean who came closest but couldn’t connect with a pass across the face of goal.

It was in the second half that Scotland finally doubled their advantage, and it was Low who struck again. Low won the ball in the Namibian circle, turned and fired home on the reverse for 2-0.

Two quick-fire goals in the final quarter ensured the Scottish victory. Lexie Macmillan finished off a sublime team move with a far post finish after Cat Nelli fed Jess Garden, who picked out Macmillan for 3-0

Moments later a scramble in the Namibian circle saw the ball forced home by Low for her hat trick, and rounding off a great 4-0 win for Scotland. The Scots now face New Zealand in their next match.

Player of the Match, Mhairi Low, said, “We worked well as a team. We’ve been struggling for goals so it’s really good to get four goals today, and the result we wanted.

“We didn’t get the result we wanted against Canada but we proved ourselves here today, and hopefully we have more goals to come in the tournament.”
