Scotland U21 Women put up strong fight against Spain

After a difficult opening match against England, Scotland looked to bounce back against Spain and climb the Pool A standings. The squad showed determination throughout but were ultimately edged out 2-0 in a fierce battle.

 

Scotland earned the majority of possession during the opening half, moving the ball around with composure and confidence. Spain found few opportunities to penetrate the Scottish circle, with defense standing firm. With no team taking charge and creating opportunities, the first half remained goalless.

Both teams continued searching for the breakthrough, and the intensity quickly increased. Spain struck first from a penalty corner, taking a 1-0 lead despite Scotland’s defensive efforts. Moments later, it was suspected Spain had doubled their advantage with another penalty corner goal, but it was quickly disallowed after the injector sent the ball too high with a slap. This decision kept Scotland within touching distance, and they entered the final quarter trailing by just one goal.

Scotland refused to let their heads drop, chasing every loose ball and maintaining pressure until the final whistle. Goalkeeper Ruby Crawford put in an impressive performance, producing a string of impressive saves, and reacting sharply to deny Spain any more goals, keeping her team firmly in the contest.

A 53rd-minute field goal from the Spanish confirmed a 2-0 win, but the final score did not reflect Scotland’s effort. They battled until the end, showing the Spanish crowd that Scotland do not go down without a fight.

 

Despite the result, Scotland produced another committed performance and can take plenty of positives into their next fixture. The squad return to the field on the 29th July against the Netherlands at 7pm.
