Scotland U21 Women lose close contest with Ireland in Glasgow

A tremendous comeback from 3-0 down by Scotland U21 Women wasn’t quite enough as they were defeated 4-3 by Ireland at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

Scotland started fast and nearly took an early lead when Jenna Park took the ball on the turn and fired goal-ward, but her shot was well saved by the leg guards of the Irish goalkeeper.

Ireland then took the lead through a penalty stroke sunk into bottom left corner as they eased their way into the game. 1-0.

The advantage for Ireland was soon doubled when a far post tap in for 2-0 finished off a lovely build up down the right flank.

Scotland enjoyed pressure in the second quarter and questioned the Irish defence but couldn’t find a way through and went into half time two behind.

Ireland upped their tempo in the third quarter and went 3-0 ahead through a penalty corner strike.

Scotland pulled one back quickly when the ball was prodded home from close range with Cat Nelli and Mhairi Low both in the mix for 3-1.

The final quarter saw Ireland add to their score line quickly. Scotland pressed to try and find another goal but a swift counter saw the ball smashed into the bottom right corner of the Scotland goal for 4-1.

Marianna Maclean wasn’t done yet, however, and the young Scot unleashed a thunderous low shot against the back board to pull it back to 4-2.

The Maclean goal sparked a comeback and Nelli surged into the Ireland circle and picked out Low for a tap-in and make it 4-3.

Scotland went for it for the remainder of the quarter but an equaliser was illusive and Ireland took the win.
