Scotland U21 Women beat Ireland to secure series win in Glasgow
A 2-1 victory in the sun at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre saw Scotland U21 Women secure a series win over Ireland. The series is part of preparation for the upcoming U21 EuroHockey Championships.
The opening quarter was a strong one for Scotland as they asked questions of the Irish defence from the outset. Cat Nelli and Ava Graham were influential in the early stages, but the threat of swift Ireland counter attacks was obvious.
It was on one of those Irish counter attacks that led to the opening goal. The second phase of an attack resulted in a clinical near-post finish for 1-0 to the visitors.
The second quarter followed the same pattern as the first; good Scotland possession and a resolute Irish defence with a dangerous counter.
Scotland almost equalised when Nelli blasted a powerful penalty corner strike from the top of the circle, but saw her effort tipped round the right post by a superb diving save.
Ireland started the second half on the front foot but it was Scotland who created the first chance. Marianna Maclean zipped a low shot from the right of the circle but was denied by a leg guard block.
Then, came the equaliser. Mairi Low deflected a ball zipped in from the right over the goalkeeper with the final touch of the third quarter to level the scores. 1-1.
With Ireland’s goalkeeper taken off Scotland took advantage on an empty goal and Cara Falconer slipped the ball into the bottom right corner to make it 2-1.
