Scotland U18 Girls top the pool with 6-0 win over Lithuania
With previous success from a 4-0 win over Wales and a 3-1 win over Russia, Scotland under 18’s continued their winning streak at the Euro’s with a 6-0 win against Lithuania.
The game, played in Rakovnik, Czech Republic started off very strong for the Scotland side, with a goal in the opening five minutes. Georgia Jones, scored a strike right into the left corner of the goal, putting Scotland on the scoreboard and gaining a 1-0 lead.
The second quarter came with much excitement with numerous opportunities. First saw Georgia Smith bring in the second goal of the game, followed a minute later by Emily Dark scoring a straight strike from the top of the D from a penalty corner, bringing Scotland into a 3-goal advantage. Less than 10 minutes later, Jennifer Walls fired the ball into the back of the net from a penalty corner, giving Scotland a 4-0 lead into half time.
After half-time, Lithuania made the game very difficult for Scotland with very strong defence, giving Scotland very little opportunities to get past the players. With a few penalty corners to Scotland, Lithuania’s defence was very quick to deny access into their goal. However, Scotland’s luck changed when Emily Dark managed to dodge players, striking right through the keeper’s legs and gaining Scotland a 5-0 lead.
In the final few minutes of the game, Emily Dark scored from a penalty corner, managing to secure her hat-trick in the match.
Head Coach Keith Smith said when asked about team performance and feelings towards the semi final: “I am really happy for the girls, they have had three strong performances and I am very glad that the team has come through on top. They have all worked hard and had no major injury which is always good.
“They had a difficult match with Lithuania packing the D, but the girls got the job done and played very well.
“With the semi-finals approaching on Friday, the girls have ever reason to be confident, so I am hoping they can set the tempo and make it very difficult for whatever team they face.”
All in all, Scotland have had a very successful start to their EuroHockey tournament. Their next game will be the semi-finals on Friday 20th July.
