Scotland U18 boys’ squad for EuroHockey Championships announced
Scotland U18 Boys’ head coach, Gavin Byres, has announced his squad for the upcoming U18 Boys’ EuroHockey Championship in Krefeld, Germany.
Scotland U18 Boys take to the stage in Group A, which consists of Germany, Belgium, Austria, and Ireland, with the top two in each group progressing to the semi-finals later in the week. Byers spoke on the difficulties he faced selecting his squad ahead of the trip:
“It is never easy finalising a squad of 18 players, and the boys have made it difficult for the coaching staff over the past eight months. That’s a good thing! The quality of player that exists in the boys’ pathway is a testament to all the coaches around Scotland who have helped develop these players, and to the boys themselves.”
Byers added, “The boys have brought a great level of commitment, quality, energy, and enthusiasm that has resulted in a really competitive squad. We believe that we have formed a team that can go out to Krefeld and compete against all teams that we will face. The team can’t wait to get out to Germany.”
Before their opening game on July 8th the squad will take on Wales in a double header at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre on the 24th at 2:30pm and 25th of June at 10:30am. Byers emphasised the importance of the games as he looks to have his team in the best shape for taking on Belgium:
“The two games against Wales will be an opportunity for the squad of 18 plus the reserves to start fine tuning all the things we need to before arriving at the Euros. It will be our last games before our opening game vs Belgium in Krefeld, so we are expecting a polished performance. The team has set high standards since our experience at the Easter 4 Nations tournament in Belgium and we aim to continue that over this weekend and into the Euros.”
