Scotland U18 boys’ six shoot into Euros semi-finals in Cardiff
Scotland U18 Boys’ were on top form when they struck six times in an excellent victory over Switzerland in EuroHockey Championship II in Cardiff.
Scotland fired home three penalty corners in the opening quarter, the first of which came right from the start of the match. It was Struan Walker who was on hand to knock home a rebound to make it 1-0 in the very early stages of the contest.
Scotland’s lightning start continued and Ben Pearson made it 2-0 in just four minutes when he fired home from a well-worked penalty corner routine.
Right at the end of the first quarter Alex Riddell made it 3-0 for Scotland U18 boys’ in Cardiff, he was on hand to finish off with another rebound to put Scotland on course for a great result.
Scotland continued to dominate possession but the Swiss were always dangerous on the break.
Switzerland pulled one back as half time approached, Nils Honhon was the scorer from a penalty corner. The strike meant Scotland U18 Boys’ led 3-1 at the break in Cardiff.
Scotland set out to score a fourth to set their nerves and put the game out of reach.
The goal came through an opportunistic Fraser Heigh strike to make it 4-1 for Scotland.
Heigh was at it again soon after when he made it 5-1 with a very composed strike from the spot.
Then Scotland U18 Boys’ went 6-1 up just as full time approached. Fraser Moran scoring the pick of the bunch with a lovely strike into the roof of the net to sign off the match on a goal scoring note.
Scotland U18 Boys’ Head Coach Andrew Brogdon said, “It was an excellent performance – it’s nice to get the job done and get into the semi-final. I’m really proud of the reaction of the players over the last two games because drawing with Wales put some pressure on us to get the results we needed. The squad has come through with flying colours with two really good performances.
“It’s very hot in Cardiff so we’ll look forward to some recovery and start preparing for the semi-final. We’ll look at the video as we always do and make sure everyone is mentally and physically prepared for the next match.”
