Scotland suffer setback against Uruguay

Scotland must beat Chile tomorrow in their final FIH World League Round 2 match after suffering a 2-1 setback at the hands of Uruguay in Rio today.
A 2-1 win for USA over the Chileans earlier in the day means the Scots now sit in third place outside the qualification spots for Round 3. Nothing less than a win tomorrow will do for the national side.
Amidst temperatures soaring well past the 40 degrees mark in the Brazilian capital, Scotland produced their poorest performance of the tournament so far.  An early penalty corner looked promising, but the ball broke to Holly Cram whose shot missed the target.
The game descended into a midfield stalemate, but the Scots had another chance to take the lead, this time Ali Bell`s cross found Vikki Bunce whose snap shot went wide.   Although the Scottish players continued to dominate, Uruguay defended well in depth and no clear-cut chances emerged.    Although underdogs, it was Uruguay who took the lead in 27 minutes, the Gordon Shepherd’s side were caught in a breakaway, and at the resulting penalty corner Uruguay found the net from a deflection.
It was all Scotland in the second half as they pushed for the equaliser but Uruguay were always dangerous in the break.   Nikki Kidd had early chances, including a drag flick from a penalty corner, then a snap shot well saved by the goalkeeper, and Nikki Lloyd brought the best out of the keeper.  But it was Uruguay who doubled their lead, at a breakaway they won a penalty corner and at the resulting scramble forced the ball over the line.
With 15 minutes left, the Scots gained a lifeline from a fortunate deflection, Linda Clement getting the consolation goal.   Scotland pressed for the equaliser but luck deserted them and Uruguay held out for an unexpected victory.
