Scotland men’s Euro qualifier squad announced
The Scotland men’s squad has been announced for EuroHockey Qualifier D, which will be held on home soil at Uddingston Hockey Club on 24-27 August.
Scotland face Wales; Switzerland and Gibraltar to compete for a place in the Men’s EuroHockey Championships 2023, to be held at the Warsteiner Hockey Park in Monchengladbach.
The team that finishes on top of the tournament will claim the coveted position, and take their place at the top table of European hockey. Second and third place will qualify for EuroHockey Championship II, and bottom place qualifies for EuroHockey Championship III.
First up for Scotland will be Gibraltar on Wed 24 August at 19:00; before the Scots face Wales at 19:00 on Thursday 25 August; and then Switzerland on Saturday 27 August at 13:00.
It was 2018 when Scotland last faced Gibraltar with the game ending 2-0 to Scotland. Scotland and Wales will surely be one of the tournament highlights, with 13 recorded head-to-heads, there’s plenty of history between the two teams. Wales took the win last time out with a close 2-1 win at a recent 4 Nations event, which was also held in Uddingston.
Scotland arrive at the tournament following the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where the Blue Sticks struck 18 goals in five matches and eventually finished ninth with a 7-2 win over Ghana.
Scotland men’s head coach Derek Forsyth is looking to build on the performances in Birmingham, and said, “We are looking forward to the qualifiers as it gives us the chance to build on the good phases of our game that we showed throughout the Commonwealth Games. It will also allow to work on the finer details we’ve identified where we need to improve.”
The Scots have good pedigree in EuroHockey tournaments, having claimed a silver medal in 2021 at EuroHockey Championship II, and won gold in Glasgow in the same competition in 2017 with a 2-1 win over Wales in the final.
