Scotland men rampant as they beat Turkey 10-0 in EuroHockey Championship II

It was a sensational goal scoring performance by Scotland men in Dublin as they won their final EuroHockey Championship II pool match 10-0 against Turkey. The match also saw Alan Forsyth score his 100th goal for Scotland, and now the Scots look ahead to playing in Friday’s semi-final.

Struan Walker scored in the opening minute to put Scotland men 1-0 ahead when his low strike from the top of the D thundered against the backboard to give the Scots a great start to the contest.

Scotland were on full throttle and went hunting for a second goal. Two penalty corner efforts saw a McConnell drag flick zip just wide of the bottom right corner, before Walker missed a carbon copy.

The second goal arrived soon, and on six minutes Alan Forsyth fired a low shot into the net to make it 2-0.

In the second quarter a penalty stroke was awarded to Scotland for a foul on Walker and Forsyth buried the ball into the bottom right corner for 3-0.

The goals kept coming and Scotland went 4-0 ahead after Walker finished off a slick passing move down the left, involving three players, with a back post tap-in.

Before long there was a hat-trick for Forsyth, when he found the far corner with a great finish across the goalkeeper for 5-0.

Into the second half and Scotland relentlessly attacked the Turkish rear guard. A Lee Morton run with the ball, and a quick passing movement in the circle, saw the ball cannon off the post and clear.

Then Forsyth bagged his fourth goal through a powerful low penalty corner into the bottom left corner. 6-0.

Another penalty corner routine saw a sublime Jamie Golden drag flick fizz into the top left corner to make it 7-0.

Scotland refused to ease off, and the next goal wasn’t far away. A move started by Keir Robb and Tommy Austin saw an explosive burst forward by Lee Morton; McConnell picked out Golden to finish. 8-0.

Moments later and Golden dove in at the far post to bag his hat trick and make it 9-0, before Walker made it 10-0 for his hat-trick, and complete the scoring.

Head Coach Jonny Caren said, “It was vital we bounced back today after the disappointment of the Italy game.

“It was the small details that let us down when we analysed that game, and it is important, with a new group working together for the first time, that we get everyone on the same page as quickly as possible. Today’s result was great but we still need to tidy a few things up on the performance side so that we can start to show our true potential.

“I’m very proud of the team, as a group, they pushed hard and created a little bit of history as the first Scottish team to score double figures in a major tournament.

“On an individual basis, huge congratulations must go to Alan Forsyth scoring his 100th goal for Scotland.

“We’ll await the result of the other group game but we’ll be preparing ourselves for a tough semi-final battle, no matter who the opposition is.”
