Scotland men lose to Wales in FIH World Cup Qualifier
Scotland men lost 5-0 to Wales at the FIH World Cup Qualifiers in Santiago, which saw the Welsh take a spot in the semi-final of the tournament.
Wales came out with a fast tempo and took an early lead when Jack Pritchard popped up the far post to tap home Gareth Furlong’s pass from the right of the circle.
It soon went to 2-0 when a thunderous penalty corner from Fred Newbold found the bottom left corner.
Scotland had a chance to pull one back at the end of the quarter but Jamie Golden’s effort was well saved to keep the Welsh in a two goal lead going into the second.
The Blue Sticks grew into the game in the second quarter and some sensational solo play by Struan Walker saw him denied by an excellent save to stop a Scotland goal.
Moments later came a sucker punch when Dale Bradshaw popped up for a tap in to make it 3-0 for Wales, which was how it remained until half time.
Things got worse in the second half when a Newbold penalty corner rebound saw Wales surge 4-0 ahead. Then Wales opened Scotland up down the left and a clever finish on the turn by Sam Welsh made it 5-0.
Scotland upped the pressure in the final quarter. Walker and Golden had powerful shots saved but Scotland couldn’t find the net and Wales took the win and the spot in the semi-finals.
