Scotland men get off to winning start at FIH World Cup Qualifiers
Scotland 3-2 France
It was a Golden start to the FIH World Cup Qualifiers as Scotland men defeated France 3-2 with goals from Jamie and Cammy Golden in Santiago.
Scotland started the contest well and enjoyed some good possession, particularly down the left side. It was France, however, who took the lead after four and half minutes when the ball fell kindly for Gaspard Xavier who fired the ball into the top left corner for 1-0.
The French goal sparked some new life into Scotland and they tested the French circle but were unable to fashion any clean chances.
In the second quarter France went two ahead. A penalty stroke was converted by Victor Charlet into the top left corner for 2-0.
Then Scotland struck back. A penalty corner routine injected by Cammy Golden resulted in a drag flick from brother Jamie Golden which thundered into the net for 2-1.
Cammy Golden then copied his brother by striking the ball into the top right corner to equalise and make it 2-2.
Then on the cusp of half time good Scottish pressure allowed Cammy Golden to unleash a lightning bolt of a strike into the top left corner for 3-2 at the break.
The third quarter was a very tight affair but Scotland was strong and resolute, and only challenged when Tommy Alexander pulled off a tremendous diving save to his left.
France piled on the pressure in the final quarter but Scotland was comfortable and took the opening day points with a 3-2 win.
