Scotland girls take Gold at School Games
Scotland girls beat Ulster in the final of the Sainsbury’s School Games 4-3 to be crowned the 2014 Winners at the weekend in Manchester.
On route to the final Scotland convincingly beat both England sides with a 3-2 win and a comfortable 5-1 win with a spectacular hatrick from CALA Edinburgh’s Amy Costello. The young Scots faced a strong Ulster team who also were unbeaten in the run up to the final.
Scotland girls had the edge throughout and lead at half time with goals from Morven Duff and Chloe Hardie. The girls pressed on and were rewarded with two more goals Katie Robertson and Flora Walker to seal the deal with Gold.
Head coach Justine Allen was over the moon at how the team performed; ‘The whole experience was great, for most of the girls it was their first time they had experienced a multi-sport event so it was a great learning curve for them, learning how to concentrate from all the different distractions that were going on.
‘We knew Ulster were going to be a tough opponents but after playing 3 games in 3 days it was about who could keep up the consistent performances.
‘It was a real team effort, the girls worked for each other and that showed when the passes came together and we got the results. A lot of player development was achieved this weekend, as the girls now go away to prepare for the Inter districts at the beginning of October.’
Scotland boys lost their first game 3-1 to England red with Western Wildcats player Rob Harwood scoring the Scots lone goal. The boys were unfortunate not to get the result they wanted as they lost 3-1 to England blue the following day.
They faced Wales in the 5th/6th playoff match on the final day which saw a solid win for the Scots beating Wales 5-1. Cameron Golden scoring two, Rob Harwood, Patrick Christie and Andrew Webb all on the score sheet to help Scotland finish fifth.
Well done to all who took part, the future of Scottish hockey looks in good hands!
