Scotland begin World League preparations against Belgium

Scotland Senior Men begin their preparations for the forthcoming FIH World League Round 2 competition in May with two international matches against Belgium in Waterloo on 20-21 April.
Commenting on the squad’s aspirations for the matches against Belgium, Scotland Team Manager Eugene Connolly said, “Expectations are mixed, Belgium are a good team and were in the Olympics last year, though they will be missing some top players. But we have not been together since Portugal last year so are at an early stage of our development as a team and squad. It will be difficult and when we last met them last in 2011, we drew one and lost two to them.”
However, these are ideal preparations for the squad’s participation in the FIH World League Round 2, particularly as Scotland will come up against testing opposition when the tournament gets underway in
Paris on 6 May.
“Belgium are in our World League competition and so these are exactly the sort of games we need to prepare ourselves for Paris”, said Connolly. “They are seeded one so we can measure ourselves against the best players and teams on view.
“The players will love the next five weeks as they are meeting top teams such as Belgium and England, as well as a high quality tournament in Paris with good opposition and a chance to do well against them, so they will be looking forward to it.”
Western Wildcats Goalkeeper Gavin Sommerville and Surbiton’s Nick Parkes are two new faces in the squad to face the Belgians;
“Gavin was with the squad in South Africa in 2006 and is returning to the Scotland set-up. He has been the best goalkeeper in the Aberdeen Asset Management National League this year so it is good to see him return”, said Connolly.
“Nick has played at junior levels and is currently playing in the English Premier League. This is a continuation of his development.”
Scotland Men: Gavin Sommerville, Ian Moodie (both Western Wildcats), Alan Dick (Holcolme), William Marshall, Gareth Hall, Alan Forsyth, Michael Bremner (all Glynhill Hotel Kelburne), Ross Stott, Gavin Byers (both Grove Menzieshill), Chris Grassick, Nick Parkes (both Surbiton), Dan Coultas (Cannock), Niall Stott (East Grinstead), Cammy Fraser (Grange), Gordon McIntyre (Beeston), Iain Scholefield (Qui Vive), Wei Adams (Royal Penguins).
