Scotland at the school games 2016

Scotland boys came third and Scotland girls came fifth at the School Games 2016 held in Loughborough.

Scotland boys won their opening game in spectacular fashion with a 10-1 win against Wales. It was 3-1 at half time with Ben Pearson, Alistair Richmond, and Owen Jenkins-Garcia scoring for Scotland with Rhys Bradshaw issuing a response for Wales. The Scots enjoyed a second half goal-fest with Garcia-Jenkins bagging his second, Cameron Golden scoring five goals, and Sam Weissen also getting on the score sheet.

Scotland followed up this incredible result the next day with 2-0 defeat to England Blues. An early goal from Gareth Griffiths game England the lead on ten minutes and the lead was doubled on 43 minutes by  Alex Emsden. Both goals coming from open play.

Scotland secured third place when they defeated Ulster 2-1. Fraser Moran gave Scotland the lead when he scored from a penalty corner on 31 minutes. The Scots doubled their lead when Cameron Golden scored from open play with a minute to go. Ulster scored on the 70th minute through Andrew O’Hare but it was too little too late as Scotland won a well-earned bronze position.

Scotland beat Ulster 2-1 in the girls’ hockey tournament at the School Games 2016 in Loughborough. Goals from Emily Dark and Hanna Mckie gave Scotland a 2-0 lead before Ulster battled back towards the end of the match. For much of the performance Scotland were in control of the match and looked capable of scoring more goals. A late rally by Ulster was held off by the Scots, many of whom performed so well during the recent EuroHockey U18 Youth Championship II tournament in Glasgow, and gave Scotland a strong winning start.

Scotland’s next game saw them take on England Red and Lucy Findlay gave the Scots an early lead on nine minutes from a penalty corner. England equalised on 18 minutes and the score was level at half time. The second half saw England score two goals through Ciara Branagan and Paige Gillott with Scotland unable to issue a response.

Scotland entered the 5th/6th place playoff against England White and it was the Scots that came out on top. Lexi Sabatelli gave Scotland the lead on five minutes from a penalty corner and Emily Dark doubled the lead on 13 minutes from another penalty corner routine. Hanna Mckie scored on 22 minutes as Scotland surged ahead as half time approached. Kymran Shergill scored on 34 minutes for England before Ella Dowling pulled England back into touching distance with the score at 3-2. Hanna Mckie made sure of the result on 62 minutes as Scotland claimed 5th spot with a 4-2 victory.
