Scotland and Ireland to play U18 Girls EuroHockey Championship II final in Glasgow
Scotland 3-1 Austria
Scotland booked a place in the U18 Girls’ EuroHockey Championship II final in Glasgow with a solid 3-1 victory over Austria.
The first quarter was dominated by Scotland with Ava Graham and Jenna Park looking dangerous on the right side. Graham and Park were both heavily involved in the first major chance of the match. Graham’s penalty corner strike was blocked before play was neatly switched to Park with space to strike, but the keeper was out quick to block.
In the second quarter Scotland came close when Isabel Molyneux went twisting and weaving forward before her effort was well saved at the bottom left corner.
Scotland eventually found the net as half time approached. A brilliant burst forward by Molyneux saw pick out Autumn Hunter who teed up Graham for a far post tap in, and 1-0.
In the second half the Scots built on their advantage with a second goal. Graham blasted a penalty corner towards goal and Sophie Davidson deflected it under the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Another penalty corner in the final quarter brought Scotland a third goal. The ball was blasted from the top of the circle and Autumn Hunter deflected a well-worked routine into the net for 3-0.
Austria had to go for it and after striking the post, they found the back of the net through a lovely Philippa Proksch deflection for 3-1.
Scotland nearly capped off the performance with a sublime goal after great skill by Marianna MacLean saw her fizz the ball across the face of goal, but under diving in at the far post couldn’t connect, and it ended 3-1.
Ireland 3-1 Czechia
Two goals in the final quarter saw Ireland beat Czechia 3-1 to secure promotion and book a place in the U18 Girls’ EuroHockey Championship II Final.
It was a great start to the match for Ireland as they took the lead through an early Scarlett Taylor penalty corner to make it 1-0.
The Irish attack drove forward in waves but the Czechia defence was resolute.
It nearly went to 2-0 when Evie Girvan went searching for the bottom left corner but was denied by an excellent diving save.
Czechia started the second half strong and quickly equalised. A lovely team move saw them play through the Ireland defence before Eliska Ostatnicka rounded the keeper to make it 1-1 with a superb finish.
The final quarter was one of drama. Korolina Lojanova was a standout with mesmeric stick skills for Czechia. In the end the difference came from a penalty corner, and it was Isla Allen who found the bottom left corner in the second phase to make it 2-1.
The game was put to bed shortly later when Girvan scored a back post deflection to make it 3-1 and secure the victory.
Wales 2-0 Lithuania
A solid 2-0 win for Wales over Lithuania saw them well placed in Pool C of U18 Girls’ EuroHockey Championship II in Glasgow.
The opening quarter was jam packed with penalty corners with Wales edging the early play. As the first quarter reached its close Wales took the lead. A spin and shot by Soffia Easterby found the back of the net to make it 1-0.
The second quarter followed a similar pattern to the first, even down to the late goal. Another spin and shot by Eloise Moat arrowed into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.
Lithuania played their way back into the contest in the third quarter with Deimante Vietrinaite in particular showing impressive stick skills, but they were unable to fashion any clear opportunities. The closest they came was a low sliding effort that slipped just wide of the post.
Wales always looked dangerous on quick counters, but there would be no further goals and Wales took the win.
Switzerland 1-2 Turkey
Turkey defeated Switzerland 2-1 to claim a vital Pool C victory at U18 EuroHockey Championship II in Glasgow.
It was an end-to-end opening to the match with both teams having a go. The longer the quarter went on the Switzerland took advantage.
As the quarter reached an end, a lovely passing sequence won the Swiss a penalty corner. The resulting routine was deflected into the net by Hermione Silver to make it 1-0.
Switzerland continued to control possession in the third quarter but it would be the Turks who would find the net. A penalty corner routine was finished from close range by Esila Isyar for 1-1.
Early in the second half Turkey scored again. A penalty corner finish by Aleyna Satilmis put Turkey 2-1 ahead.
The rest of the quarter was stunted by injuries and knocks as a week of action began to catch up with the players.
Switzerland went all out to find an equaliser and in the final few seconds they thought they had it, but a quite unbelievable goal line clearance by Sila Celebi kept them out, and bagged the vital win for Turkey.
