Sarah Coupar wins Technical Official of the Year at Shetland Sports Awards
Shetland official Sarah Coupar has won Technical Official of the Year at the Shetland Sports Awards.
It is a tremendous success for Sarah to have been recognised with this award.
The annual event is held to celebrate Shetland sport and recognise the achievements of teams and individuals who have had an outstanding year.

Sarah is most deserving of the award. The hockey season in Shetland runs from April to September involving six local teams, a Shetland select women’s and mixed team, competing for several cups and playing league matches. Sarah umpires 50-60 games a season and takes a 50 mile round trip twice a week in the process.
When the Shetland season ends Sarah umpires for National League, which she says gives great experience at umpiring at a more advanced level.
The award is great recognition of Sarah’s fantastic dedication to hockey.
Sarah Coupar said, “I was totally shocked to get the award. The girls at Shetland nominated me, to my surprise, and it’s greatly appreciated.
“I have been umpiring for about four years. It all started when Shetland ladies entered the District Cup and needed an umpire to travel with them. I sat the C badge in Aberdeen, passed, then things escalated from there.
“Blair Thompson helped me get North District games that season. I got a few games under my belt and signed up for Aberdeen University so I could do National League games. Helen Henderson helped me to progress and still does. Without her involvement I wouldn’t be umpiring National League.
“I am forever grateful to all involved with Scottish Hockey for giving me this opportunity to develop and to continue learning. All the umpire coaches and umpires have been inspirational and encouraging to me.”
