Sangster`s late strike earns a draw

EUROHOCKEY INDOOR CLUB CUP (WOMEN) –
VIENNA

VWS Dundee Wanderers recovered some of their composure
in the second match at the EuroHockey Indoor Club Cup with a very
creditable 3-3 draw with Spanish side Club de Campo, but Wanderers
still look consigned to the relegation pool with their final pool
game today against tournament favourites Berliner from Germany who
have won both their outings.

Wanderers made most of the early running but found themselves
one down to Campo at the interval despite creating several chances
but failing to find the target.

Within two minutes of the restart, a long ball from Sam Sangster
found Jess Ross and her square pass was fired home by Amy
Rowan.  The Scots took a 2-1 lead through Julie Bryce
following a pass by Louise Sherriffs.  But the game looked
lost when the Spanish scored two goals in as many minutes for a 3-2
lead and Becky Ward was forced into brilliant goal-line save to
keep her side in the contest.

With three minutes left coach Dave Stott took a gamble, he
replaced goalkeeper Carmin Dow with another outfield player in an
attempt to save the game, Sam Sangster played the role of “kicking
back”, and forced Campo into conceding a late penalty corner.
Up stepped Sangster to fire her flick into the roof of the net with
just 10 seconds left on the clock for a well deserved share of the
points.

Wanderers` coach Dave Stott remarked:  “The first touch
still needs to be better in order to cash in, but really pleased
with the all-round effort and team performance.  Happy to be
carrying forward a point.  The plans are to run the bench
against Berliner and conserve energy for the cross-overs.”
