Round up – Scotland Aspiring and Emerging squads 4Nations Day 3
Scotland Emerging Girls 2-4 Spain
Despite a slow start in the contest Scotland Emerging Girls competed well with Spain but lost 4-2.
Scotland didn’t start well, and the Spanish took full advantage of it with intense attacking play. It allowed them to go 2-0 up by the end of the first quarter.
Spain enjoyed good possession in the second quarter forcing Scotland to defend deep, but there would be no further goals.
It went to 3-0 after half time before Scotland battled back. A penalty corner routine saw the ball struck from the top of the circle, and deflected home by the injector. Emily McLean, to pull it back to 3-1.
Then Scotland scored again and after some lovely build up play, Charlotte Robertson weaved along the baseline before picking out Ella Mundell who slotted home for 3-2.
A close end to the contest saw Spain score a fourth and take the win, but it was another great learning experience for the Scots.
Scotland Aspiring Girls 0-2 Spain
It was the best performance of the weekend by Scotland Aspiring Girls, but they fell short against tournament winners Spain in a 2-0 defeat.
Spain took the lead after six minutes when they took a quick restart, taking advantage of Scotland not being set, and made it 1-0.
Despite this, Scotland got on the ball, threatened from a couple of corners, and also had a very controlled defence in the contest.
The Scots could have equalised in the first half when Keira Foster had an effort after a turnover high up the pitch, but a good save denied the goal.
A stroke in the third quarter saw Spain go 2-0 up, but again Scotland came close to scoring too. Some good work by Lexie Macmillan on the right saw her fire the ball across goal and Zara Kennedy’s feint touch wasn’t enough to find the net.
A good save from Ruby Crawford denied Spain late in the game, and it ended 2-0 with lots of positives to take away from the match.
Scotland Aspiring Boys 1-4 Spain
Despite losing 4-1 to Spain, Scotland Aspiring Boys put in their best performance of the three games at the 4Nations.
Scotland looked comfortable and went toe-to-toe with a strong Spanish side; making good chances while Callum Douglas also made some great saves in the early stages.
Scotland went 1-0 up, which they held until half time. Some really good play down the left, resulted in a couple of shots at goal, and the ball fell to Johnny Bradley who slotted it under the goalkeeper for 1-0.
After a busy few days the Scots eventually ran out of steam in the second half, and Spain came back into it. A succession of tremendous drag flicks surged Spain into a 3-1 lead in the third quarter.
Then Spain grabbed a fourth late in the game, but it was a great series of matches for the team as they build towards the Euros in July.
Scotland Emerging Boys 0-2 Spain
Scotland Emerging Boys’ continued to show great improvement over the weekend despite a 2-0 defeat to Spain.
The Scots were excellent in defence, and the very good Spanish side struggled to break Scotland down.
The opening goal eventually came from the penalty spot in the second quarter, when Scotland were a man down, and was dispatched comfortably for 1-0.
Scotland came close to an equaliser when a drag flick zipped just wide of the post.
Spain’s second goal arrived in the third quarter; following a good save the ball bounced around the Scots circle and fell kindly for a Spanish stick to make it 2-0.
An impressive performance despite the performance and Scotland can build towards the 8 Nations where the teams will meet again this summer.
