Purple patch for Inverleith in Sofia
A good day at the office for Inverleith in Sofia, after thumping Sirvintos from Lithuania and seeing off Hungarian side Soroksari in their second match, the Scots top Pool B with full points and have already qualified for the promotion pool. Tomorrow they take on bottom side Triglav Predanovci in their final pool match.
INVERLEITH 7 SIRVINTOS (LITHUANIA) 0
A promising start by Inverleith in their opening pool match with a comfortable 7-0 win over Lithuanian champions Sirvintos. The result puts the Scots at the top of Pool B after the first round of games, but only by a two goal difference from Hungarian side Soroksari who beat Triglav Predanonci from Slovenia 6-1.
So it looks like the afternoon clash with the Hungarians could be for pole position in the table.
It was impressive at both ends of the pitch – Charlie Jack scored a hat-trick among Inverleith`s seven goals…keeper Greg Mackenzie kept a clean sheet…and finally the Edinburgh side converted three of their four penalty corners. So promising all round.
The game started slowly with a goalless first quarter…but then the goals began to flow. Captain Kyle Taylor led from the front when he finished off Inverleith`s first penalty corner. That was followed two minutes later by a strike from Keir Robb and in the last seconds of the first half Charlie Jack made it three from open play.
Taylor found the net at another penalty corner in the third quarter for 4-0 and then the Lithuanians had their only set piece chance but failed to beat Mackenzie. The Scots improved their goal tally in the final quarter, Stuart Hatton made it five and in the final couple of minutes Jack scored twice from a penalty corner and then open play for a total of seven without reply.
INVERLEITH 6 SOROKSARI (HUNGARY) 4
Perhaps billed at the pool decider, Inverleith rose to the occasion with a 6-4 win – but there was never more than a goal in it for most of the contest. A hard-fought but crucial win for Stuart Neave`s charges.
The first quarter belonged to Inverleith but it had an inauspicious start when Imre Farkas opened for the Hungarians at a penalty corner in only three minutes. But the set back was transient and Keir Robb from open play quickly levelled. The Scots were soon in the lead with another open play strike from striker Charlie Jack.
However, Soroksari roared back into the contest in the second quarter, it started with a penalty corner conversion from Bence Szigeti, to level, then Keir Robb put Inverleith back into the lead, but Alexian Csogor squared it again for the Hungarians. And so it stood at 3-3 at the interval, but Soroksari had two penalty corners and scored both while the Scots were awarded four and failed to find the net with any.
The Hungarians went ahead again a\t the start of the third quarter through Martin Csogor but within a couple of minutes Inverleith finally sunk their fifth penalty corner with a strike from captain Kyle Taylor for four each. Within a minute the Scots were back in the lead at 5-4 with another score from Kyle Taylor in this topsy-turvy tussle.
However, Inverleith finally put their noses further in front with another open play strike from Keir Robb – and that provided his hat-trick for the game. And that is how it stood at the end, apart from a yellow card for Sam Hunt in the closing minute.
