Promotion for Clydesdale Western and Edinburgh University in Alanya and silver for Western men
It’s mission accomplished over this European weekend as all Scotland`s three sides have achieved their objective of promotion.
Clydesdale Western and Edinburgh University confirmed their promotion agenda with victories in today`s play-offs in Alanya – and that was achieved with eight straight victories between them. You can`t get much better than that.
Western Wildcats men were also promoted – that was achieved yesterday – but today they were on the wrong end of a twelve goal fest and lost 8-4.
Ironically their first reversal of the entire season, which see them take a creditable silver medal away from Geneva.
EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY 5 SV ARMINEN (AUSTRIA) 0
It might have been hot in Turkey today but the Edinburgh students made it even hotter for Austrian side SV Arminen with a devastating first half display that produced four goals, and effectively killed the game off as a contest.
It took just five minutes for Ava Findlay to put Edinburgh into the lead and settle any nerves. Before the end of the first quarter the students were two up, this time the open play goal came from Itske Hooftman.
The scoring continued in the second quarter, it started with a strike by Sophie Hinds and just before the interval Findlay added her own second of the game at a penalty corner.
Eight minutes into the second half former Scotland striker Amy Brodie added a fifth from open play…and that was the end of the scoring.
WESTERN 4 CARDIFF & MET (WALES) 8
Western Wildcats didn’t make the greatest of starts, in only four minutes Jolyon Morgan and Jack Pritchard had put Cardiff two up. Worse was to follow in the second quarter with two further goals from Owain Dolan-Grey and Morgan again for a 4-0 lead.
However, just on the interval Western were awarded a penalty and Andrew McConnell converted from the spot to pull one back.
A comeback looked on the cards as McConnell scored at a penalty corner a minute into the second half.
But the stuffing was knocked out of the Scots when James Tyson and Morgan again for his hat-trick from the spot put the Welsh side 6-2 ahead in the third quarter. And then just before the end of the quarter Patrick McDowell made it seven for Cardiff – and no way back for Vishal Marwaha`s charges.
In the closing minutes Ioan Wall made it 8-2 for Cardiff but there was some consolation at the end with an open play goal from Rob Harwood and a penalty corner strike from McConnell for his hat-trick.
A disappointed coach Vishal Marwaha said: “We got off to a bad start and never really recovered. After half-time we brought it back to 4-2 and we gave away a poor goal which made it very difficult. We tried to push up and score and we left spaces at the back which cost us.”
CLYDESDALE WESTERN 2 GAZIANTEP POLISGUCU (TURKEY) 1
Clydesdale Western took the initiative in the first quarter, in nine minutes captain Frances Lonergan opened the scoring at a penalty corner. And that is how the score stood at the interval.
Early in the second half Lonergan repeated her set piece exercise and doubled Clydesdale`s tally. But within a couple of minutes Perihan Cinar pulled one back for the home side and that made for a tight finish but the Titwood club saw it out for promotion.
“At 2-0 I was hoping we would push for more but we lost our way a bit and they took advantage of that. We had other chances but did not take them,” said coach Derek Forsyth.
“Defensively we worked very hard to limit their chances and that`s what got us over the line.
“In the end it’s great to have two Scottish teams win promotion.”
