Plucky Scots go down in Terrassa
SPAIN 2 SCOTLAND 0 – 3rd TEST MATCH IN
TERRASSA
Although Scotland lost 2-0 to Spain in the final test
match in Terrassa today, new coach Derek Forsyth can take
considerable encouragement in his new squad, they drew one game and
narrowly lost the other two in the three match test series against
a side ranked fifth in the world, 17 places above the Scots, and on
their way to the London Olympics in a few weeks time.
The Scots could have taken an early lead in 11 minutes at a
penalty corner, the ball was switched to Willie Marshall whose shot
was blocked by the Spanish goalkeeper who then completed a double
save to deny Alan Forsyth`s rebound. But the Spanish stepped
it up and scored twice in three minutes from open play and a set
piece.
The home side piled on the pressure in the opening minutes of
the second half and Scots goalkeeper Jamie Cachia was called upon
to prevent the Spanish going further ahead, in total he saved six
penalty corners after the interval. The Scots steadied and
Edinburgh University`s Callum Duke could have pulled one back, but
his effort went wide of the target. Forsyth`s charges
continued creating chances in the closing minutes and gained two
penalty corners, the first was a direct shot from Marshall which
was saved and at the other the routine broke
down. With five minutes left the Spanish were
awarded a penalty but their shot from the spot fortunately went
wide of the left hand post.
“This is a very young team who can feel rightly proud of
themselves against one of the top nations in the world, they stuck
to their task even when the Spanish put them under pressure,” said
Eugene Connolly, Scotland`s manager. “Derek has done
extremely well with this squad of youngsters, they have adapted
well to his systems and strategies.”
