Opportunity to join the Board of Scottish Hockey

Scottish Hockey’s mission is to inspire involvement in hockey – the fun, friendly and exciting sport for life.

With membership growth of over 80% in four years; our largest ever domestic game team supporting our members, clubs and districts; more players in Great Britain programmes than ever before; and our International teams driven to compete with the best in the World, it is an exciting time for hockey in Scotland.

Our position as a naturally equitable sport is reflected in our membership, staff and Directors.

With a goal of being one of the top three team sports in Scotland we are constantly focused on improving as a business.

Following Board members reaching their end of term, and a skills assessment of the current board, we have opportunities for up to three new Directors and two members of our Audit Committee.

In line with best practice, we are actively seeking for at least one of these roles to be independent – individuals not currently involved with hockey in Scotland.

We are looking for Directors:

  • An individual with significant experience of leading, and or, chairing an organisation. You should have a strong understanding of the sporting and political landscape in Scotland. Commercial or voluntary sector experience at a strategic level would also be advantageous.
  • An individual with a strong strategic understanding of performance athletes and optimal player pathways. A knowledge of sports development would be advantageous. This role is likely to include the individual representing Scottish Hockey on the Great Britain Hockey Board. To allow a strong handover during an Olympic Year this role will officially join the Board in 2020.
  • An individual with strong financial experience to support the financial aspects of the business, and act as Chair of the Scottish Hockey Audit Committee.

Audit Committee Members:

  • Should have a passion to help Scottish Hockey run efficiently with strong governance. While a knowledge of governance or finance would be advantageous, we are really interested in team players with a range of experiences who can support our vision and values. Full training will be provided.

Background

Scottish Hockey is the national governing body for hockey in Scotland. Our role is to inspire involvement in hockey, and work with a diverse range of partners to grow and strengthen hockey in Scotland.

We have over 12,000 members across our 107 clubs, and tens of thousands of other participants in schools and universities.

We are in the process of launching our new strategic plan for hockey in Scotland going through to 2023. The plan focuses on building on the successes of the previous plan, improving our sport at all levels and has key performance indicators for the organisation to deliver against.

Our Domestic Games team combines coaching, officiating, our development staff and competitions while our Performance team supports the growth and development of players through our pathway programme from under 16 to our full international teams.

Interested?

A non-executive director of Scottish Hockey is a volunteer. Board members provide the strategic guidance for the organisation and set its broad policies. A series of volunteer committees and employed staff make and then execute the sport’s operational decisions.

In the interests of having a balanced and representative Board and audit committee, expression of interest are particularly welcome from people currently under represented on Scotland’s Boards such as individuals with a disability, women, ethnic minorities and those aged under 50.

The Board meets a minimum of six times annually. These meetings are normally held in the early evening at our office in the Glasgow National Hockey Centre, a number of these meetings are held electronically to reduce travel commitments for individuals. Some roles such as Chair or GB hockey representative require some daytime commitment for meetings.  In addition, Directors are regularly asked for their advice and opinions, and may be available to the staff for consultation in specific areas of expertise. The term of office for a Director is four years. There is an opportunity to reappoint at the end of the four years.

The Audit Committee will meet up to four times annually. These meetings will be held in the early evening and will be held electronically.

At this time no applications are sought but anybody interested should forward an expression of interest to [email protected] by Friday 15th February.

Any questions around the roles, or for an informal discussion, contact Scott Baird, Chair of Scottish Hockey, who chairs the Board’s Nomination Committee. [email protected]

Or David Sweetman the Chief Executive at [email protected]
