With the impact of COVID-19 on all aspects of Scottish life, it is also a challenging time as we prepare and plan for the future.

Our position as a naturally equitable sport is reflected in our membership, staff and directors. We have our strategic target of being one of the top three team sports in Scotland and we are constantly focused on improving as a business and creating and delivering opportunities to improve hockey.

Following changes in the Scottish Hockey Board and a skills analysis of existing directors, Scottish Hockey is looking to recruit two directors. One individual with expertise in governance, and the other with a strong commercial background.

The director with responsibility for corporate governance will support the board, CEO and staff to deliver our corporate governance responsibilities including the Companies Act; data protection; human resources and safeguarding.

The Commercial Director will chair the Scottish Hockey Commercial Group and support the CEO, Commercial Consultant and staff to increase the commercial viability and income generated by Scottish Hockey in line with our strategic plan.

Background

Scottish Hockey (SH) is the national governing body for hockey in Scotland. Our role is to inspire involvement in hockey, and work with a diverse range of partners to grow and strengthen hockey in Scotland.

We have over 13,000 members across over 100 clubs, and tens of thousands of other participants in schools and universities.

We are 18 months into our strategic plan, and while short term focus has moved to supporting the sport through COVID-19 the plan focuses on building on the successes of the previous plan; improving our sport at all levels and has key performance indicators for the organisation to deliver against. https://www.scottish-hockey.org.uk/governance/corporate-strategy/

Our Domestic Games team combines coaching, officiating, our development staff and our events while our performance team supports the growth and development of players through our pathway programme from under 16 to our full international teams.

 

Interested?

The directors of Scottish Hockey are volunteers. Board members provide the strategic guidance for the organisation and set its broad policies. A series of volunteer committees and employed staff make and then execute the sport’s operational decisions.

In the interests of having a balanced and representative board, expression of interest is particularly welcome from people currently underrepresented on Scotland’s boards such as individuals with a disability; women; ethnic minorities and those aged under 50.

The board meets a minimum of six times annually. When in person, these meetings are normally held in the early evening at our office in the Glasgow National Hockey Centre. The majority of our meetings are held electronically to reduce travel commitments for individuals.  In addition, directors are regularly asked for their advice and opinions, and may be available to the staff for consultation in specific areas of expertise. The term of office for a director is four years. There is an opportunity to reappoint at the end of the four years.
