Open/Men’s Cup and Plate Semi Finals
Glasgow National Hockey Centre
10am (Pitch 1) – Open/Men’s Scottish Plate – Western Wildcats 6-1 Inverleith
Two Premiership sides faced off in the first game of the day, the plate semi final. After a close first quarter, Western raced into a three goal lead thanks to goals from Adam MacKenzie, Iain McFadden and Fraser Moran. Inverleith pulled one back just before half time through Kaze Cordero.
Into the third quarter and two quick fire goals put the game beyond Inverleith. First Rob Harwood got himself on the scoresheet before just a minute later Fraser Calder added his sides fifth goal of the game. In the final minute Iain McFadden added his second of the game from a penalty corner and it’s Western Wildcats who advance to the final.
10am (Pitch 2) – Open/Men’s District Plate – Giffnock 7-4 Rottenrow
In the first game on pitch 2, Giffnock and Rottenrow shared 11 goals in the Men’s District Plate semi final. The only goal of the first quarter came from Gregory Bond from a penalty corner to give Giffnock the lead. They had stretched their lead to three by half time thanks to further goals by Murray Bett and Max Blanchflower. Into the second half and Rottenrow got themselves back in the game. Goals from Rupert Bath and Chris Lawson either side of a Angus Gillespie goal for Giffnock left the score at the end of the third quarter as 4-2.
The final quarter kicked into life and Rottenrow pulled another goal back through Colin Melia but Giffnock would put the game beyond doubt with a quickfire treble of goals from David Benson, Andrew Barnett and Murray Bett. Chris Lawson grabbed his second of the game with the final touch of the game as Giffnock move forward to the final.
12pm (Pitch 1) – Open/Men’s District Cup – Watsonians 2 (0) 2-2 (2) Hillhead 2
In a very tight game, Hillhead came out on top after a shootout against Watsonians. It was a goalless first half with both teams creating chances. In the second half Hillhead took the lead, Craig Hilton making no mistake from the penalty spot. Watsonians found the equaliser just a few minutes later, Charlie Buchanan-Smith finishing off a nicely worked goal. Hillhead would immediately hit back and retake the lead through Murray McVicar, but Watsonians again found an equaliser this time from a penalty corner as Alexander Raez sent the match to a shootout.
In the shootout both teams missed their first two opportunities, but Hillhead made no mistake with their next two and Bryce Forbes stayed strong in the goal to prevent Watsonians from scoring and helped his team reach the final of the District Cup.
12pm (Pitch 2) – Open/Men’s Reserve Plate – Edinburgh University 3 3-4 Hillhead 4
On pitch 2 we had another game filled with goals as Hillhead triumphed over Edinburgh University by the odd goal in seven. Hillhead took an early lead in this one thanks to Charlie Hamilton, and it would remain 1-0 until almost half time. Three minutes before the break Hillhead doubled their lead through Gregor Chambers, but on the half time whistle Finn Dower pulled one back for the students from a penalty corner.
In the second half Dower struck again from a penalty corner to level the tie, but the lead lasted less than a minute as Alan Meikle scored to put Hillhead back in front. Edinburgh University equalised again just minutes later, Louis Vanlint converting a penalty stroke. The only goal of the final quarter, and the winner, came from Charlie Hamilton to send Hillhead to the final.
2pm (Pitch 2) – Open/Mens Reserve Plate – Watsonians 3 3-1 Hillhead 5
In the third game of the day on pitch 2, Watsonians overcame Hillhead. After a goalless first quarter, Watsonians opened the scoring midway through the second when Finlay Sharp scored a penalty stroke. They doubled their lead in quarter three through Ben Lawrence, and put they game beyond doubt early in the final quarter thanks to a goal from Angus Potter. Hillhead pulled one back through James Prowse but it proved to be only a consolation.
Peffermill
3pm – Open/Mens District Plate – ESM 2 8-2 Granite City Wanderers 2
Granite City Wanderers took the lead in this District plate tie at Peffermill thanks to Peter Temple but the lead would only last 3 minutes, Martin Constable equalising from a penalty corner. Granite City would retake the lead in the second quarter, Yash Chiniwala was the scorer. ESM were back level by half time, Fraser Sturrock this time scoring from a penalty corner. Into the second half and ESM upper their game and hit six without reply. A goal from Peter Serle sandwiched between a Fraser Sturrock double to complete his hat trick. In the final quarter Peter Serle would score again, as would Struan Craig and Lucas Heiton to send ESM to the final.
