Olympians visit Girls Inter-Districts
Sunday saw the culmination of the u16-u18 Girls
Inter-districts tournament at Peffermill with a fantastic display
of youth hockey. The u16 trophy was fiercely contested with the
title only being decided on points difference, which saw West come
out on top followed by East coming a very close second. For the
u18’s, the winner was a bit more clear cut with East triumphing
undefeated, followed by a strong Midland in second
place.
Not only was there excitement on the pitch but the clubhouse saw
some exciting action too in the form of GB hockey stars Emily
Maguire and Laura Bartlett, who took time to come and talk to the
players and spectators on what it’s like to be an Olympian. The
girls took to the stage on two separate occasions answering
questions ranging from, how hard they have to train, to what was
the best part of the Olympics, as well as telling the audience what
they have planned for the future. Following the questions the girls
stayed on to sign autographs (not just limited to paper but also
including sticks, shoes, socks and hoodys), as well as pose for
photos.
They managed to watch a couple games of hockey before being
involved in the presentations where they were given a framed set of
photos of them playing for GB, as a mark of their achievements in
the London 2012 Olympic Games. The girls were presented these
pictures by previous 1992 bronze medal winning Olympians Alison
Ramsay, Sue Fraser and Wendy Justice, which allowed for a fantastic
picture of all five medal winning Olympians together. The winning
team and runners up were then presented with their medals and
trophies by Laura and Emily before going on to pose for more photos
and sign even more autographs! The day and weekend was an all in
all success with fantastic hockey on the pitch and a great
atmosphere off.
Many thanks go to all who were involved in making the weekend
run as smoothly as possible and making it the success it was!
