No goals at GBSL

GREAT BRITAIN SUPER LEAGUE – LILLIESHALL

MEN

Graham Moodie, Scotland`s newly appointed under 21
coach, now knows he has a mountain to climb as he watched his young
charges lose 8-0 to English side Pennine Pumas in their opening
game of the Great Britain Super League at Lillieshall
yesterday.

The former Athens Olympian hoped to use the GBSL tournament to
cast his eye over his squad as the initial build-up for the
European Junior Nations Championships in Den Bosch  this
summer.

Although the Pumas controlled most of the play the Scots, under
the name of Caledonian Cougars, had a couple of chances in the
first half, Clydesdale`s Peter Baldwin was unlucky with his
shot.   An excellent move down the left exposed the
English defence, Ross McIntyre`s resulting cross was just missed by
a diving Fraser Sands at the back post.

After the interval the young Scots were restricted to a single
chance, Grange`s Duncan Riddell won a foul, he then drove directly
into the circle but his resulting shot went wide of the right hand
post.

WOMEN

Scotland`s under 21 women also drew a blank with a 3-0 reversal
against English side Pennine Pumas.   Kelburne`s Stevie
McInally had a gilt-edged chance in the first half before there was
any scoring, but her rebound shot sailed over the bar.

In 43 minutes Scotland gained their only penalty corner of the
game, but Ali Howie`s effort was saved by the English
goalkeeper.  All the English goals came from second phase
rebounds from penalty corners.

SUBWAY NATIONAL LEAGUE.

Watsonians finally qualified for the promotion play-off spot
with a 2-1 win over AAM Gordonians in Aberdeen, they now play CALA
Edinburgh for the right to play in the first division next
season.
