Narrow defeat for Scots

2nd TEST MATCH   SCOTLAND V SOUTH AFRICA –
TITWOOD (GLASGOW)

For the first time in six outings South Africa, six
places ahead of Scotland in the world rankings, managed to beat
Gordon Shepherd`s charges 2-1 in the second test match at Titwood
in Glasgow yesterday.

Prior to the hostilities there was a presentation to defender
Catriona Ralph on the occasion of her hundredth Scotland cap.

As in the first game, the South Africans were the dominant
force, but a combination of poor shooting and some brilliant saves
by Milne Craig Western goalkeeper Amy Gibson kept the scoreline
close for the entire contest.   With South Africa in
control of the midfield, it took the Scots 22 minutes to mount an
attack with a good run up the right by Ali Howie, but it came to
nothing.   At their sixth penalty corner South Africa
almost inevitably took the lead with a rebound strike by Sulette
Damons.

The South African were given a shock three minutes into the
second half when Scotland equalised; Howie weaved her way along the
base-line, her cross found Sam Judge whose reverse stick shot was
only half stopped by the goalkeeper.   Within a minute
the Scots might have gone ahead, Linda Clement move along the same
base-line caused panic in the South African defence, but the danger
was finally cleared.

But in 56 minutes the South Africans took the lead again, the
Scots defence was beaten for pace and Jennifer Wilson gave Gibson
no chance with a fierce low shot.  The Scots retaliated with a
couple penalty corners, Ailsa Wyllie`s shot went over the bar while
Becky Merchant`s effort was easily blocked by the
keeper.   The visitors were content to play out the final
minutes for a deserved 2-1 victory.
