Morris and Lawal strikes earn Scots draw against Germany
After losing 5-1 to Germany in the opening game of the three
nations tournament in Lille, Scotland`s under 18 girls retaliated
with a gritty performance that saw Colin Clarke`s youngsters emerge
with a well earned 2-2 draw against the same side yesterday
evening.
The tone of the occasion was set when GHK`s Jenny Morris fired a
shot into the roof of the net, leaving the German keeper rooted to
the spot. Not surprisingly the Germans replied with a series
of attacks, but the Scots defence held firm with Laura Page of
Inverleith and CALA Edinburgh`s Kirsty Hill outstanding at the
back.
But the Germans finally equalised in 20 minutes and then took the
lead after a scramble in the Scottish circle. The Scots
youngsters were not to be denied their moment of glory, Grange
striker Kike Lawal outpaced the German defenders, rounded the
keeper and scored to tie the scores at 2-2.
“This was a tremendous result for Scotland, and totally deserved,”
said coach Colin Clarke. “We corrected some of the errors of
the previous game and were stronger defensively, we still have a
number of areas to work on but it`s another ;positive step
forward.”
