Morgan FP enjoy celebratory dinner

Morgan Academy FP Men’s Hockey Club / FMGM Monarchs
Morgan Academy FP Men’s Hockey Club enjoyed a celebratory  dinner for veterans and players on 11th May 2013, at the Rugby Clubrooms, Alloway Place, Dundee. This date coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the very day Morgan FP won the Scottish Cup in 1963. The Club’s name is at the top of the list of winners on the Trophy as this was also the first year of the Scottish Cup competition.
The dinner celebrated the many successes of the Club and very importantly, the fellowship and friendship enjoyed over the years. The club was formed on 14th September 1923, some 90 years ago this year.
As a flavour of the high points of the past, some items are included here.  The club had several members who gained National honours and also one Olympian.
Some remembered the “Sevens” victory in 1935 and 1949; the league trophy in 1939; the Midlands and Watsonian “Sixes” in 1962. Although the pinnacle of achievement was the winning of The Scottish Cup in 1963, the club reached the final again in 1967 and 1974.
Morgan FP Men’s Hockey Club amalgamated with other local clubs to form FMGM Monarchs. This amalgam has enjoyed recent successes in National Indoor Titles and promotion from Division 3 to Division 2. It also gained promotion to Division 2 in the National Outdoor league. Player successes are worthy of note, three players achieved U16 International status and one player represented the Royal Navy.
A display of minute books from 1923 to 1984 proved interesting. The Jubilee Commemorative Magazine printed in 1974 was a popular browse. Other memorabilia was on display for the passage down memory lane.
It was good to see that eight of the 1963 Scottish Cup winning squad were in attendance to chew over that Campaign. Attending were I.Low, G.Carr, Ian (Jock) Stout, D Thornton, D H Beedie, B Keillor M Longair and I Fox.
The Chairman acknowledged the presence, at the Dinner, of three great Veterans of the Club. Firstly, Bill Reid the oldest surviving Past President. He was selected to play for the Scottish Touring team (The Picts) in 1956; Secondly, Gerry Carr who was in the British Olympic Hockey Team at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico. As an international player he represented his country many times. Finally but by no means least, the Chairman stated that over a period of 60 years  Jock Stout has been a great example and role model to young players making their way. He was Club Captain for six consecutive seasons, a record no one has equalled.
The Dinner was ably and entertainingly chaired by Roger Brunton, Past President. The main speaker was David Adam, Past President of Morgan Rugby Club and living up to his reputation gave a highly humorous speech culminating in the proposal of a toast to the Hockey Club past and present. Arthur Danskin, Past President continued the humorous vein in his reply to the toast and gave entertaining anecdotes of his long membership of the Club. Martin Boag gave the vote of thanks and at the same time gave a time-line of where the Club now resides within FMGM Monarchs.
With formalities over, the gathering merged to enjoy stories past and present.
