More goals in Lousada as Scotland men beat Switzerland
A seven-goal-thriller went the way of Scotland with a 4-3 victory over Switzerland in Men’s EuroHockey Championship II in Lousada, and book a place in Friday’s semi-final.
Scotland was on the front foot from the start and the early pressure was awarded with an early goal. A swift attack down the left saw the ball cut back for Jamie Green to sweep home at the near post for 1-0.
They say you’re at your most vulnerable just after you score a goal, and this proved the case for Scotland. From the restart Switzerland tore forward and Yannick Hug equalised for 1-1.
The tables quickly turned again and it was Scotland who broke forward and Green took the ball out the air and shifted it low past the keeper for 2-1, and his second goal of the match.
The opening quarter ended in a flurry of goals with Jamie Golden firing home a penalty corner and Elias Bronnimann scoring for Switzerland to make it 3-2 for Scotland at the first break.
Switzerland started the second quarter well and enjoyed good spells of possession. Louis Thijs equalised for the Swiss with a far post finish to make the pressure count. 3-3.
The second half was tentative with neither side creating much. The best chance of the third quarter went to Scotland and an excellent save denied Struan Walker on the counter attack down the right.
A succession of penalty corners in the final quarter saw Golden finally find the net when a nice dummy and slip to Golden allowed him the time to pick his spot in the top right corner. 4-3.
Switzerland battled hard to try and find an equaliser but the Scots were strong and took the points with a fine victory.
