Mixed results for Scotland`s youth
UNDER 16 GIRLS V WALES IN WREXHAM
The Scots youngsters fulfilled their potential in the
second test match against Wales with a comfortable 3-0
win. The goals came from Kerry-Anne Hastings from the
Mary Erskine School, Western`s Fiona Burnett and finally
Watsonians` Claire Hill on her sixteenth birthday. The Scots
now lead in the three test match series.
UNDER 16 BOYS – HDM TOURNAMENT IN DEN HAAG (NED)
Considering that Scotland`s under 16 squad were playing against
under 18 teams in the HDM tournament, it is to their credit that
they were able to compete against boys two years older, and
certainly not be disgraced. Against the English side
Kent in the opening game today, a goal by Western Wildcats` Rob
Harwood gave the Scots youngsters a 1-0 half time lead, but two
late goals from Kent gave them a 2-1 victory at the end.
Against the Swiss under 18 side a strike by Clydesdale`s Gordon
Amour put the Scots a goal up in only five minutes.
Although the Swiss equalised after the interval, in a strong finish
CALA Edinburgh`s Patrick Christie hammered in the winner from the
top of the circle for a 2-1 victory.
The Scots youngsters kept their best performance against the
crack Dutch side Gouda and took the lead through AMN Hillhead`s
John Reid in the first half. The favourites came back in the
second half, equalised with a penalty corner goal and then won the
game with a late strike.
UNDER 18 BOYS V WALES IN WREXHAM
Scotland`s under 18 side went down 3-1 to Wales in the second
test match, Kelburne`s Ed Greaves scored Scotland`s only
goal. On Friday the Scots went down 5-1 to Wales,
Clydesdale`s Michael O`Donovan getting the consolation.
UNDER 16 DEVELOPMENT SQUAD V WALES IN WREXHAM
Scotland`s youngsters started brightly after several changes in
the squad, and Strathallan`s Jack Kinlock drove through the Welsh
defence to give the Scots an early lead, but Wales managed to
equalise before the interval. The Scots dominated the second
half, frustrated by the Welsh keeper, but were unlucky when Ross
Buchanan seemed to have been fouled by the keeper in the circle,
but nothing was given. Shortly after the Welsh scored from a
penalty corner to win the game 2-1.
