Mixed day for Cougars at Futures Cup

Day one in St Albans saw some encouraging performances, but only one win from four in the Caledonian Cougars’ first day at the 2021 Futures Cup competition. Given the limited preparation time for all the stage group teams due to the ongoing issues with Covid, all four teams have performed strongly on their first match day.

Game 1, Girls under 15/16: Caledonian Cougars 6 Mercia Lynx 3

The Emerging Cougars got their tournament off to a great start with a commanding win over their counterparts from the English Midlands. The Cougars twice held the lead in the first half, with goals from Abi Moffat and Sophie Anderson, before two late strikes saw the Lynx take a 3-2 half time lead. However, four unanswered goals in the last 10 minutes from Ava Allan, Darcy Littlefield and a double from Anna Warnock saw the Cougars home. Today sees them take on the Wessex Leopards with a win or draw taking them through to Saturday’s final.

Game 2, Boys under 17: Caledonian Cougars 2 Mercia Lynx 3

The Aspiring Cougars Boys lost a tight encounter by the odd goal in 5 against their Midland rivals. The teams were tied at 1-1 at the half time interval with a Ben Galloway strike cancelling out the Lynx early lead. The teams were locked again at 2-2 as a Pete Caughey field goal levelled things up again. However, a 4th quarter strike by the Lynx gave them the win, much to the frustration of the Cougars who had a number of late opportunities to salvage a result. The Cougars face a strong Wessex Leopards side today where a win would take them through to the bronze medal match.

Game 3, Boys under 15/16: Caledonian Cougars 2 Saxon Tigers 4

The Emerging boys team put in a strong performance against the Saxon Tigers but came up short after conceding a number of goals on the counter. The Tigers scored early in the match, however the Cougars levelled late in the first quarter through Murray Griffiths. Despite lots of possession and circle penetrations, the Cougars found themselves 3-1 down in the fourth quarter, before Jonny Bradley scored to give the Scots hope. However, a late strike by the boys from the South-East gave the Tigers the win. The Cougars will need to overcome the Celtic Jaguars later today to have a chance of making the medal matches.

Game 4, Girls under 17: Caledonian Cougars 1 Wessex Leopards 2

The Aspiring girls lost a tight encounter. Despite taking the lead early in the second quarter through Izzy Usher, the Cougars were pegged back by the Leopards soon after, leaving the teams tied at 1-1 at half time. The second half was a tense affair, with a goal early in the fourth quarter giving the Leopards the win. The Cougars still have an opportunity to make the final but need a win over the Saxon Tigers this afternoon.
