Mission possible for Moodie
Graham Moodie, Scotland under 21 coach, has now a simple
mission – his charges must beat Wales tomorrow and then England on
Saturday in the European Junior Nations championships in Den Bosch
to stave off relegation and qualify for the 2013 Junior World
Cup.
Although the relegation pool comprising of Scotland, Wales,
England and Spain is a fresh competition, it is not a clean slate
as the Scots carry forward their 4-2 defeat at the hands of the
Spanish from the original group match, and so start off three
points behind both Spain and England, the latter beat Wales
4-1.
But it is far from mission-impossible. Grange`s Adam
Walker will be back from suspension for the games, and in an
earlier warm-up game the Scots only went down 2-0 to
England.
But the first port of call is to see off Wales who also finished
pointless at the bottom of their pool. The Scots
youngsters did beat Wales 4-2 earlier this year in the Celtic Cup,
two goals each for the Grange pair Matt Connor and Fraser Sands did
the damage.
In the original pool competition the Scots youngsters were
always under pressure against Germany, Spain and Belgium, all top
sides in Europe, but experienced senior internationalists Michael
Bremner and Alan Forsyth should get much more room against Wales
and that should in turn throw up more scoring chances.
In the other match in this group, England take on Spain with the
winner almost certain to stay among Europe`s elite in two years
time.
