Menzieshill’s title credentials test
League leaders Grove Menzieshill will have any title aspirations
severely tested this weekend when they travel to meet Glynhill
Hotel Kelburne at Bellahouston(13.30) on Saturday in the Aberdeen
Asset Management Men’s League.
Menzieshill have enjoyed a very impressive start to the campaign
winning five out of the six games played. The only blemish to date
was a narrow home defeat at the hands of fellow title contenders
Grange.
Kelburne manager Harry Coles acknowledges the danger this
fixture presents commenting “Menzieshill seem to be playing well
and scoring freely. The fact they came to Glasgow a couple of weeks
ago and took five off Wildcats should be ample warning to
everyone.”
The Dundee team have enjoyed success at the home of the
champions in the recent past but suffered two heavy losses last
season conceding eighteen goals in the process which perhaps is an
indication of the size of the task.
Sunday sees Kelburne travel to meet Edinburgh University at
Peffermill(13.30) and Coles summation of that game is “Edinburgh
University have always proved to be a stuffy team to overcome and
we expect no different on this occasion.”
Similarly Grange face a double header weekend with PSL
Clydesdale visiting Peffermill(11.30) on Saturday and they then
travel to Countesswells(14.00) to take on AAM Gordonians the
following day.
Coach Colin Clarke views the weekend as “A challenge to see if
we can continue with the manner of performance we had against
Inverleith last Sunday and reduce the individual errors which led
to cheap goals.”
Games between the two teams have recently been closely fought
affairs with Clydesdale claiming a share of the points when they
last visited. Clarke will be hoping that he has ironed out, in
training during the week, the cheap goals being conceded as the
visitors do carry a goal scoring threat in particular through set
pieces with Ciaran Crawford.
If Grange do hope to mount a title challenge this season then
Sunday’s game with bottom club Gordonians will be viewed as a
must win game for Clarke’s men. However the Aberdeen team did open
their account last weekend with a fighting 3-3 draw with Edinburgh
University.
Western Wildcats enjoyed great success last weekend claiming
maximum points against Grange and AMN Hillhead. The Auchenhowie
club’s coach Vishal Marwaha felt “The Grange game particularly
pleasing as we have struggled in that fixture over the last few
seasons.”
Marwaha is wary of the threat Inverleith will pose when they
travel west on Saturday (13.00) remarking “Inverleith have shown
that they have improved from last year. We had two pretty close
games last season and I expect a tough game.” Inverleith sit mid
table at present but visits to the west coast have proved
successful this season for the Edinburgh team with the six points
collected to date coming from Clydesdale and Hillhead.
The Wildcats’ coach finished by saying “We carry a good goal
threat but will need to improve defensively.” Steven Percy and Euan
Miller remain long term injury absentees.
The Saturday programme is completed with the fixtures between
AMN Hillhead and AAM Gordonians at Jordanhill School(14.25) and
Watsonians versus Edinburgh University at Mary Erskine
School(13.00.)
