Menzieshill put five past off colour Wildcats
ABERDEEN ASSET MANAGEMENT NATIONAL LEAGUE –
MEN
Gavin Tomlinson was the man of the match in Grove
Menzieshill`s 5-0 mauling of Western Wildcats at Auchenhowie, he
scored twice from set pieces at one end and was awesome in defence
at the other. There might be some surprise at the extent of
the victory, but Menzieshill looked the much sharper outfit
throughout, while the Wildcats appeared distinctly off
colour.
After a tentative start by both sides, it was Tomlinson who
broke the deadlock at the Taysiders` third penalty corner, his
direct flick floated over the prostrate body of Gavin Sommerville
in the Wildcats` goal. Western had chances to get back
into the contest, they missed three set pieces and Scott McCartney
had a miss-cue just at the post. Five minutes from the
interval Menzieshill`s lead was doubled, after a good flowing move
Jamie Carnegie fired a shot goalwards only for Stuart Bracegirdle`s
stick to deflect the ball into the roof of the net past
Sommerville. The Dundonians looked to have scored a third
just before the interval, but Mike Ross` penalty corner hit was
considered dangerous.
The second half was one-way traffic for the visitors and Chris
Wilson had a couple of early chances to increase Menzieshill`s
lead. Tomlinson then sealed the points for the
Dundonians, at another set piece his high flicked cannoned into the
net off the bar for the third. Within minutes
Menzieshill went into a 4-0 lead, Olly James fed the ball on to
Ross McPherson and he slid the ball home. The
Wildcats pressed to get back into the contest and Douglas Simpson
had a couple of chances to get a goal back but his efforts failed
to trouble the Menzieshill`s rearguard. In fact was the
Taysiders who finished the scoring when Carnegie beat Sommerville
with a low shot in the closing minutes.
Grange kept up their winning sequence with a 3-2 win over
Edinburgh University. All the Grange goals came from
penalty corners through Rob Barr (2) and Fraser Sands.
Inverleith returned to winning ways with a 1-0 win over PSL
Clydesdale. The Edinburgh side had a lot of pressure in the
first half, Fabian Wolski hit a post at a penalty corner, but it
was goalless at the interval. The winner came from an
own goal 15 minutes into the second half, John Harris fired the
ball into the circle and it cannoned off a couple of defenders into
the bottom corner of the net.
At the other end of the table AMN Hillhead and Watsonians shared
the points in a 3-3 draw. The Edinburgh side romped
into a three goal lead in the first half before Paul Crooks pulled
one back for Hillhead from a penalty corner before the
interval. Hillhead brought the game back to parity
after the break with goals from Graham Campbell from another set
piece and an own goal off a defender following a ball into the
circle by Andy McLaine.
