Men`s Premiership top six still up for grabs

There were two games outstanding from the first phase of the men’s Premiership, and they both have a bearing on the final top six spot in the Premiership for the second half of the season.

There are three teams directly involved, Clydesdale currently sit in sixth place on 16 points and have completed their programme. On paper the Titwood-based side can be caught by both Uddingston and Inverleith who are both on 13 points, but with an inferior goal difference.

Uddingston are at home to Watsonians and will need to win by seven clear goals to overtake Clydesdale.

Watsonians have had their best season for many a year and have already qualified for the top six with five victories under their belt, only losing to Grange, Western and Edinburgh University. And they have an incentive in winning – three points on Saturday would lift them into fourth place in the table.

The young Uddingston outfit under coach Harry Dunlop have done well to sit in mid-table, it would be a bonus to win this fixture, but by seven goals is certainly a tall order.

Dunlop is not distracted by the goal difference scenario. “We are very much looking forward to playing Watsonians this weekend. We are focusing on “performance habits” that are likely to result in good hockey and the opportunity to score goals. We aren`t focusing on the goal difference as I think it`s counterproductive in terms of where Uddingston are in our rebuild process with so many young players in our squad.”

The other contender for sixth place is Inverleith who travel to Grove Menzieshill on Sunday, but their mission is even more daunting – they need to win by 14 goals.

Certainly the Taysiders are in second bottom spot and have already conceded 56 goals in their ten games to date, but to score 14 is a herculean task.

So Clydesdale hope to retain sixth place, must nevertheless wait until Sunday evening to see if they are playing in the top six phase in the weeks to come.
