McMullan sinks Grove in Tayside derby
PRESIDENTS CUP
Western Wildcats and Grove Menzieshill moved a point
ahead of Inverleith, who had no game today, in pool A of the
Presidents Cup.
The Wildcats top the table on goal difference after beating AAM
Gordonians 8-3 in the north east. The catalyst was
veteran striker Scott McCartney who notched five goals, the others
came from Niall Somerville, Chris Anderson and Steven
Percy. For the Aberdonians Joel Evans scored twice
while Grant Veitch got the other.
Menzieshill are also up there at the top after beating
Watsonians 5-0, but it took a rather freak goal to open the scoring
for the Taysiders. After a goalless first 20 minutes,
Menzieshill sent a long ball into the Watsonians circle, the
goalkeeper left it, the ball cannoned off a post and Paul Martin
gratefully took full advantage to put his side in front.
Despite a disallowed “goal” early in second half after the
umpires debated whether anybody touched the ball in the circle, it
was Martin again who provided Menzieshill with their second
goal. The result was finally sealed in the final
five minutes with a flurry of strikes from Gavin Tomlinson from a
penalty corner along with Ally Irvine and Michael Ross.
Despite having no game today, Grange still hold on to pole
position in Pool B after AMN Hillhead and PSL Team Sports
Clydesdale drew 2-2.
PEREGRINES CUP
A single goal from Jude McMullan opened up Pool A of the
Peregrines Cup by giving VWS Dundee Wanderers a 1-0 victory over
Tayside rivals Grove Menzieshill – now two points separate four
clubs at the top.
Grove perhaps shaded the first half with three penalty corners
and an excellent save from Carmin Dow in the Wanderers`
goal. The winning strike came midway through the second
half, a long ball out of defence found 14-year-old Charlotte
Watson, she slipped it on to McMullan who wrong-footed the keeper
with a half hit shot.
Glynhill Kelburne looked to have the better of Western Wildcats
when they strolled into a two goal lead at the interval, Mollie
Godfrey and Adele Dastey were on target. But the
Wildcats clawed their way back into the contest, courtesy of two
goals from Alex Stuart from set pieces, to level the scores at
2-2.
