Magnificent seven for Menzieshill
ABERDEEN ASSET MANAGEMENT NATIONAL LEAGUE
Inverleith coach Stevie McCurry was hoping to mount a
challenge for honours this season, but he watched his side go down
7-3 to a rampant Grove Menzieshill on Tayside in national league,
sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management.
The Edinburgh side never recovered from being 4-0 down in the
opening 22 minutes, the damage was done by Mike Ross (2), Paul
Martin and Gavin Tomlinson from a penalty corner, Lewis Gibson
pulled one back for Inverleith before the interval.
The Taysiders raced into a 6-1 lead in the second half through
another set piece by Tomlinson and Craig Falconer, then Inverleith
staged a mini-fightback with two goals from German Fabian Wolski,
but a late strike by Ross Stott sealed the points for
Menzieshill.
No such problems for Western Wildcats in their opening fixture,
they clawed their way to a 2-0 win over Edinburgh
University. In the first half a breakaway up the right
involving Ian Moodie and Scott McCartney created the chance and a
full length dive from Douglas Simpson finished off the
move. After the break Neil Sommerville broke from
midfield, the ball found Moodie on the base-line and his cross was
tapped in by McCartney for the second.
Glynhill Kelburne took 17 minutes to break down a stubborn
Watsonians defence, it was finally Mark Ralph to open the scoring
with a low drag flick at a penalty corner. The Paisley
side added two further goals before the interval, Willie Marshall
deflected home a long ball from Ralph, and the latter converted
from the spot following a stick chop on Jonny Christie in the act
of shooting.
The champions added four more in the second half, Scotland
striker Alan Forsyth found the net with a low reverse stick shot,
then Michael Christie scored, to be followed by a deft deflection
by teenager Jack McAllister on a long diagonal ball from Chris
Nelson – this was McAllister`s first national league
goal. The scoring was completed by Forsyth again from
close range.
PSL Clydesdale started their campaign with a 5-2 victory over
AMN Hillhead at Titwood. The latter took the lead
against the run of play through Jonathan Horn, but the home side
reached the interval 3-1 ahead with goals from Aidan Black into the
roof of the net, Fraser Hirst from the spot and then Rory McCann
with a close range reverse stick shot. Ciaran Crawford
added a fourth from a penalty corner, Graham Campbell pulled one
back for Hillhead, but a set piece strike by Steven McKnight
confirmed the three points for Clydesdale.
CALA Edinburgh started the women`s national league campaign with a
3-1 away win over newly promoted Inverleith. Amber
McNeill gave CALA a 1-0 lead at the interval, then Kerry-Anne
Hastings doubled the lead before new Canadian recruit Kate
Terry pulled one back for Inverleith, the club`s first ever goal in
the top flight. The three points were sealed for CALA
when Anne-Beth Evans scored the third for CALA.
