Last weekend of the indoor division 1 league format
The usual suspects are at the apex of their respective league tables – Watsonians and Clydesdale Western in the women`s while Western Wildcats and Inverleith lead the men`s.
It could not be closer in the women`s competition – Watsonians and Clydesdale are both unbeaten, and on the same twelve points, and the same 16 goal difference. They meet head-to-head in the second game on Sunday.
In recent years the results between these sides have been extremely close – in last year`s final it was a draw and Watsonians only triumphed 2-1 in a shoot-out. It is likely to be close again but a lot may depend on the players available in the respective squads and the depth of the squads.
However, at the end of the day the result is perhaps not terminal; the target will be reaching the Gala Day Final, which is winner-take-all for the championship and Europe, and both sides will be gunning to be there.
Later in the day Watsonians take on Grange while Clydesdale are up against Hillhead, both sides are in the lower echelons of the table.
So who else is in line for a top four place? Wildcats are third, but have only one game against Dundee Wanderers who are only a point adrift – that could decide the final third slot. But Wanderers have an earlier encounter with Hillhead and could overtake the Cats – albeit perhaps only temporarily.
The remaining sides might have the primary objective of trying to avoid the relegation play-off slot; at the moment that is occupied by Grange who have yet to get off the mark. Uddingston are on three points with Hillhead a point better off. These sides will look to dig deep to try to pick up more points on Sunday although the Grange v Uddingston clash will certainly yield something.
And so to the men`s competition where undefeated Western Wildcats hold sway after seeing off Inverleith by nine goals at the end of last year. However, Western`s opening encounter is against Grove Menzieshill, who have managed to slip into third spot, after back-to-back wins against Hillhead and Uddingston. Later in the day Wildcats are up against Grange and will target the three points.
Inverleith coach Stuart Neave will want to shake off the recent reversal against the champions and amass another six points against Grange and Hillhead to retain second spot.
Perhaps the game-of-the-day waits until the day`s end when Grove Menzieshill take on Watsonians with third place as the potential prize. At the moment the Taysiders are a point ahead, but they have an earlier date with Western while Watsonians will target to take the three points against Hillhead, and therefore could have a two point advantage going into the final encounter.
The present lower four have work to do to advance. After two wins in the last outing Grange are best placed with six points but they play Inverleith and Western, after three consecutive defeats Dundee Wanderers have to dig deep, while Uddingston and Hillhead are currently further adrift.
