Kelburne waltz past Wien
EUROLEAGUE
GLYNHILL KELBURNE 3 AHTC Wien (Austria)
1
Glynhill Kelburne have almost certainly made it into the
knock-out stages of the EuroLeague for the first time since 2007
with a well earned 3-1 win over Austrian champions AHTC Wien at
East Grinstead.
To spoil the Paisley outfit`s celebrations, the Austrians would
now have to beat Rot-Weiss Koln today, unlikely as the crack German
side are group favourites and crushed the Scots 8-1 in the opening
pool match on Friday.
A nightmare start for Kelburne, Chris Nelson gave the ball away
cheaply and Adam Amtmanski slid the ball past Mark Fulton to put
Wien ahead. The Paisley side were soon back on level
terms, a long ball into the circle by Mark Ralph was deftly
deflected into the net by Willie Marshall. Kelburne
then dominated proceedings, Jack McAllister had a carbon copy
deflection but this time the goalkeeper was alert to the situation,
and at a penalty corner Mark Ralph`s shot was blocked only for Alan
Forsyth send his volley from the rebound well over the
bar.
But the Scottish champions could not convert their superiority
into goals, in particular they had six penalty corners in the first
half but with no success. Kelburne almost took the lead
just on the half-time hooter, Ralph won a set piece but Marshall`s
effort went wide of the target.
The Scots went ahead for the first time in the game early in the
second half, Michael Christie was the provider with a brilliant run
up the right beating four Austrians in the process, and his cross
found the unmarked Alan Forsyth at the far post and he slid the
ball home. The Scottish champions continued to
dominate, Jonny Christie had his effort saved on the line, a Ben
Peterson shot came to nothing, then Forsyth completely missed the
ball after Michael Christie had set up the chance.
The Austrians then pushed for the equaliser with the Kelburne
defence living dangerously at times, but with five minutes left the
pressure was finally lifted with the third goal, Michael Bremner
created the opening by beating two defenders in the circle, his
cross was not cleared and Jonny Christie drove the loose ball into
the net. The Scots almost notched a fourth in the final
seconds, Forsyth passed the ball on to Peterson but the youngster
was unable to find a way round the Austrian goalkeeper.
“Very pleased with the result, the boys did very well to come
back from the big defeat at the hands of Rot-Weiss. We
showed great discipline and played to our game plan after seeing a
video of Wien in action,” said Harry Coles, Kelburne`s manager.
