Kelburne return to domestic action

Glynhill Hotel Kelburne finally made a belated return to
domestic action, after the late postponement of the scheduled game
with Inverleith yesterday, with a 4-2 win over PSL Clydesdale in
the Aberdeen Asset Management Men’s League at Titwood today.

Both teams were missing players due to GB Under 20 training with
Alan Forsyth and Michael Bremner missing for the visitors and Peter
Baldwin for the home side.

Kelburne were on the attack right from the start but solid
Clydesdale defending kept kept the Paisley side at bay. However
young Ed Greaves was on hand to net a cross from Ben Peterson after
fifteen minutes and shortly afterwards Jonny Christie doubled the
advantage.

The Titwood side continued to battle bravely with Andrew Allan
producing two great goal line saves to keep Kelburne out.. Reward
for this hard work came just before the break when Gregor Hirst was
on hand to net a rebound from a set piece to reduce the leeway for
the home side.

After the break Kelburne continued to enjoy the vast majority of
possession and early in the half a ball driven into the top of the
circle by Willie Marshall was controlled by Lee Morton who turned
to rifle a low shot into the left corner. Minutes later a fierce
shot from a penalty corner was blocked but Christie was quick to
lift the rebound over the stranded keeper to add the fourth.

Clydesdale refused to buckle and were once again rewarded when
they scored from another well worked set piece. This time the
routine worked the ball quickly back to the injector Steven
McKnight who swept the ball home with around ten minutes left to
play.

Kelburne were forced to see out the rest of the game a man short
following a red card for Marshall after an apparent wild swipe
which took the legs away from a Clydesdale player. The decision was
hotly disputed by the visitors but they showed all their quality
and experience by controlling the final stages denying Clydesdale
any real opportunities to take any advantage of the numerical
supremancy.

Grange bounced back from their defeat at the hands of Western
Wildcats to win the Edinburgh derby with Inverleith 4-3. Grange
took an early lead when Matt Connor deflected the ball home after
good work from Hamish Imrie then scored a second when Duncan Riddle
netted following good work by Cammie Fraser.

Rob Barr converted a penalty stroke to give Grange a three goal
advantage at the break. This was quickly followed up with a fourth
through Connor early in the second period to apparently seal an
easy win. However Inverleith had other ideas and staged a spirited
comeback which produced three goals to set up a nervous last few
minutes for Grange.

Western Wildcats completed a good weekend for the Auchenhowie
club with a last gasp 3-2 win over AMN Hillhead where a last
second  set piece goal  from Scott McCartney sealed a
dramatic home win.

Ross Clunie had given the Wildcats a slender advantage at the
break but Hillhead were back on level terms early in the second
half. McCartney put the home side back in front with a goal from a
penalty corner but once again Hillhead squared the game  from
a set piece setting up the exciting finale.

Elsewhere Grove Menzieshill had to fight all the way to claim
the points with a 4-3 win over Watsonians. The Edinburgh opened the
scoring somewhat against the run of play when Magnus Ferrier
dispatched a fierce shot high into the net. Menzieshill were back
on level terms by the break through Gavin Tomlinson.

The visitors then went ahead courtesy of Gus Fraser-Harris but
Ross Stott squared the game shortly afterwards. Menzieshill seemed
to have the points secured through goals from Gavin Byers and a
second for Tomlinson but a second from Ferrier set up a tense
finish.

Finally Edinburgh University and AAM Gordonians shared the
spoils in a six goal thriller at Peffermill with Max Brorf, Ross
Jamieson and Alfie Kerry on the score sheet for the home side.
Gordonians replied through Martin Babicky (2) and Kenny Steel.
