Kelburne outclassed by Rot-Weiss
EUROLEAGUE
GLYNHILL KELBURNE 1 ROT-WEISS KOLN (GERMANY)

Scottish champions Glynhill Kelburne went down 8-1 to
top German side Rot-Weiss Koln in the opening pool match of the
EuroLeague at East Grinstead this morning.
Despite the defeat, Kelburne`s chances of qualifying for the
knock-out stages will rest on the Scots coming second in the three
team pool, and that means beating Austrian champions AHTC Wien
tomorrow.
The Paisley side started quite brightly but fell behind in six
minutes through a low shot by Arnau Becuwe after a short spell of
pressure. Kelburne had a chance to equalise but
Alan Forsyth`s ball into the circle just eluded Ben Peterson`s
outstretched stick.
The Germans piled on the pressure, Marco Miltkau doubled the
score with a neat deflection and just before the interval Jan-Marco
Montag made it 3-0 at their third penalty corner.
It might have been more but for some good saves by goalkeeper
Fergus Barrows and a brilliant goal-line save by Mark Ralph at a
penalty corner. The Scots finally found the net
at an overtime penalty corner, Ralph`s initial strike was charged
down, the ball fell kindly to Michael Bremner who beat two
defenders and laid it on to Peterson to slap the ball home.
Kelburne were very much on the back foot for most of the second
half and seldom troubled the German defence. The Scots
defence was caught cold in 44 minutes and Miltkau took advantage to
score his own second. As the Paisley side gave away
some cheap possession, Rot Weiss piled on the goals, Montag notched
his hat-trick while Christopher Zeller and Alexander Schollkopf
completed the scoring for Rot-Weiss.
“We were outclassed by Rot-Weiss in their speed of thought and
movement, they played to a standard beyond us. I thought we
competed well but they are a class act. But nothing really
has changed, the big game is still against Wien”, said Harry Coles,
Kelburne`s manager.
