Kelburne on fire in Lille
EUROPEAN CLUB CHAMPIONS TROPHY – DAY
2
Glynhill Kelburne are now in line for a place in the
final of the European Club Champions Trophy in Lille after beating
the Welsh side Whitchurch 5-2 in the second pool match, a result
that leaves the Paisley side in pole position in the
group.
The Scots made the best of starts, Ross McIntrye passed the ball
on to Willie Marshall, but he was brought down in the circle and
Alan Forsyth dispatched a low shot past the keeper from the spot
for the opener. Kelburne dominated possession but
created few clear-cut chances until 27 minutes when Lee Morton
created the opening for Forsyth to rifle the ball into the roof of
the net for the second. Poor marking in the Paisley defence
allowed Nicholas Rees to pull one back for Whitchurch just on the
interval.
Two goals in as many minutes not long into the second half
exposed some leaks in the Welsh defence, good work from Michael
Bremner created the first chance and Jonny Christie fired in an
unstoppable shot from the top of the circle to make it 3-1.
At the next attack Michael Christie was fouled and at the resulting
penalty corner Willie Marshall dispatched a fierce shot that dipped
over the prostrate body of the Welsh keeper into the net for the
fourth.
With the result no longer in doubt Kelburne played a more
relaxed form of hockey and added a fifth with a low drag flick from
Mark Ralph at a set piece after a foul on Forsyth.
Whitchurch notched a late goal from Noor Hassan, but proved to be
little more than a consolation.
“We found difficulty in breaking down a resolute Welsh defence
in the first half, but there was a definite improvement after the
interval. This performance was not as good as our win over
Roma yesterday, so we need to improve on certain aspects before our
next match,” said Harry Coles, Kelburne`s manager.
Tomorrow Kelburne take on the Austrian champions SV
Arminen with a win or draw sufficient to nudge the Scots into
Monday`s final.
In the women`s equivalent event in Belfast, Grove Menzieshill
effectively fell out of contention when they were soundly beaten
4-0 by the powerful Ukrainian side Sumchanka, Bohdana Sadova got
all four goals for the Eastern Europeans. Grove are now
in third place in their pool with a game against bottom side
Libertas San Saba from Italy to come tomorrow.
