Kelburne maul Wildcats
ABERDEEN ASSET MANAGEMENT NATIONAL LEAGUE
It is difficult to see any stopping Glynhill Kelburne claiming
their ninth consecutive Aberdeen Asset Management national league
title, the champions went to Auchenhowie, retained their perfect
record with a convincing 5-0 victory over Western Wildcats and
casually moved into pole position in the table on goal difference
from Grange.
There was not much to choose between the sides in the opening
exchanges, but when the Wildcats defence failed to clear the danger
at a goalmouth scramble, Jonny Christie stepped up to the poke the
loose ball home for the opener. The Paisley outfit had
chances to increase their lead before the interval, Ed Greaves sent
a deflection over the bar and then international striker Alan
Forsyth contrived to hit the post with the goal at his mercy.
Kelburne were the more enterprising side after the interval and
took a three goal lead, Forsyth made amends for his earlier miss by
finishing off a move along the bye-line by Mark Ralph, soon after
Christie found himself alone in the circle following a deflection
on by Forsyth and Kelburne striker made no
mistake. Teenager Lee Morton then missed the
target from just a few inches out, but the result was sealed when
Ben Peterson with a fierce reverse stick shot and then Ed Greaves
with a deflection scored two more in the closing minutes. The
Wildcats were even denied a consolation at an overtime penalty
corner, Scott McCartney`s strike was casually saved on the line by
Ralph.
Inverleith moved into fourth spot in the table with a 5-1 win
over Watsonians. Inverleith`s Adam Mackenzie scored
both the opening goals at either end of the pitch, the first an own
goal for Watsonians followed by the equaliser for his own
side. John Harris put Inverleith into a 2-1 lead at the
interval. It was all Inverleith after the break and
three further goals were added by McKenzie again from a penalty
corner, Tom Cousins and Andrew Sinclair.
PSL Clydesdale climbed up the table with a 4-0 win over bottom
side AAM Gordonians, Michael McKenzie, John Martin, Steven McKnight
and Ciaran Crawford were on target for the Titwood outfit.
Champions Grove Menzieshill won the top of the table clash with
CALA Edinburgh 4-2 to retain pole position in the women`s
competition. Linda Clement gave Grove an early lead,
but CALA came storming back with strikes by Kerry-Anne Hastings and
Amber McNeill to take a 2-1 lead. Ailsa Wyllie then
restore parity for the Dundonians with a goal on the
interval. The second half belonged to Grove and
they took the three points with strikes by Louise Carroll from a
penalty corner and then Sarah Jamieson.
Edinburgh University moved into second spot with a 6-3 win over
Giffnock, Nikki Kidd notched a hat-trick, Sam Judge got two and the
other came from Louise Campbell. Milne Craig Western
are on the same points as the students, but with an inferior goal
difference, after they saw off Dundee Wanderers 3-0 at
Titwood. It was goalless at the interval but Western
had the better of the second half, Susan McGilveray opened from the
spot, Morag McLellan notched the second with a reverse stick shot
and Ali Howie finished the scoring for the some side.
Kelburne climbed to fifth in the table with a 3-2 away win
against Wildcats at Auchenhowie. The home side were one
in front at the interval through Rachael Houghton, but a second
half hat-trick by Rachael Ewing put the Paisley side 3-1 in
front. In a frantic denouement both sides missed
from the spot and Jen Lennox pulled one back for the Wildcats, but
Kelburne held on for the three points.
Inverleith gained their first ever points in the top flight with
a narrow 3-2 win over Grange, Laura Protheroe, Emma Helm and Eilidh
Thomson were the scorers.
PRAGOCHEMA INDOOR CUP – PRAGUE
Grange have taken very much of a development side to the
Pragochema Indoor Cup in Prague this weekend in order to hone the
indoor experience of their growing squad of youngsters – only Gary
Cameron is over 23.
The Scots lost the opening match 8-1 to the crack Russian side
Ekaterinburg, a side with an immense European indoor pedigree, 17
year old Murdo Elwis scored Grange`s only goal.
The Edinburgh outfit then went down 4-1 to Ukrainian side Vinnitsa,
this time Duncan Riddell found the net.
Grange youngsters persistence finally paid off when they beat
Slovakian side Raka 4-2, Stewart Laing scored twice while Fraser
Sands and Hamish Imrie were also on the scoresheet.
